Hey! I've always wondered what gamers preferred for their screen size in gaming laptops.
Personally, I always go for the 15" laptops so it can fit reasonably in my backpack.
What screen size do you gamers prefer or have purchased in the past? Why?
Or does it not matter and it's all about the GPU.
Thanks for the help!

I love 17 inchers.. 15 is too smal for me... Also better GPU's used be available in 17" before then 15" although now the same ones are available in both..
-
I prefer 17" because the bigger screen helps in FPS games actually. Seeing people from far away is more difficult on a smaller screen (to a point). Also, I like the strongest hardware I can get at the time, and those are all in 17" or 18". It fits great in my backpack though.
-
I used to be ok with 15'', but now I don't think I could go back after playing on a 17" screen. The laptop's quite bulky but still portable enough.
-
compared my 17 inch to my rommates 15.
15 is for ants, I can't use it even if it was free. -
17 for me, although I tried 15 now but using it with an external monitor
-
15" is fine for me. My 13.3" is a bit small in some instances, but I survive. If I can find a reasonably powerful small and light 15" I'll bite. The 970m / 980m laptops should help in that matter. From the laptops I review, I'd love a 17" but portability is quite compromised even with the thinner and lighter versions. If you move your laptop around a lot 17" is just too cumbersome.

15 for me, 17 is simply too bulky. laptops are purchased over desktops for portability, and 17 just isnt portable.
-
15 inches for me. 15 inches in 1080p is good enough for my laptop experience; I have a desktop computer if I want a larger screen with a higher resolution. I use the same laptop moving between university and home, so portability is more important to me than a larger screen.
-
15 inches is quite painful gaming on i much prefer 17 inches and a good display to match.
-
17 or nothing for me. Hell I'd buy a larger screen even, 20 sounds great! 15 is just too small for gaming. I have no idea how people use laptops even smaller than 15" for gaming, makes no sense to me.

Back when I was a student, 15" all the way. Now it's 17"+ or bust.
-
Since I work on my laptop, I have the W230ss, but otherwise I would go 15 in. I had a 17 and it was not comfortable using it on the couch.
-
I used 15" notebooks back many years, but after using 17" and 18" notebooks for the last 5 years, I can never go back to the tiny little 15" displays. To me it was just like SSDs. Once you tried it, you cant downgrade ever again.
I have no issues carrying a 17" notebook with me at all -
I traded my 17 Sammy for the Blade 14. I like the smaller form factor and half the weight. I find I am just as immersed in my games as before, no issue. 100% positive switch.

Yep - I struggled with a massive 17" machine for ages - great as a desktop replacement but as a *lap*top only good to cut off all circulation from your thighs down
So my next machine will be smaller, lighter, pickup-and-playable. Although I'm now doubting whether to go "really light/thin" because of all the heat problems...
-
13.3, 14, 15.6. That's all I'll use.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
13-14 is my preference, if need be 15"
-
15.6" or smaller. I sold my last 17.3" partly because of the lack of mobility. Performance is not an issue for me since I'm always gonna have a desktop.
-
I've gone 17", and now I can't go back.
-
the thread seems to be quite evenly split between 15 and 17. it seems the split is definitely in how people use their laptop: 17 inch people prefer the maximum gaming performance and screen space, while 15 and down prefer greater mobility (for work/school?).
-
17 has never been an option for me. My first options were 15 inch. But once I got in touch with the alienware m14x r1 (still using it and will until the next revision of alienware 14 with the 900M series). It's very good. Gaming laptops tended to get thick, so after a few years when my laptop isn't as strong as it used to be, I'm there with a bulky laptop that ain't strong either. With the alienware 14 I think you have the best balance between performance and portability.
So I will remain with the 14 inch class. unless I see SLI on a sexy 15 inch laptop. That might change my mind, as the performance you get compared to portability is MUCH higher. -
It has to be 15" because I take it work every day and frequently travel with it. I could probably live with the weight of a 17" machine, but it is just too bulky and it would stand out at meetings.
-
Had a 15' that I was using for college but I got it replaced for a 18' laptop. Any 15' looks like a toy now compared to the 18', plus the 18' is easier on the eyes and helps build muscles.
-
Looks indeed like opinions differ greatly here.
But I just can't help but wonder that many of the 15 inchers that doesnt need the portability havent really tried gaming with a 17" or 18" notebook before. Just like Cryzer and a couple of other guys here, I thought I was using the ideal notebook witj my 15" Asus notebook back in the days, until I tried 17". I can never go back to gaming on a 15" anymore. Its so tiny. It hurts my eyes just thinking about it. Movies, gaming, less scrolling on websites and proper text size, cant ever imagine me doing that on a 15 and be happypreview, Marecki_clf, Cryzer and 1 other person like this. -
I am very into small yet powerful systems. I like it as small it can get without a major compromise in GPU performance, CPU performance or temperatures. 14 inch seemed about right. Also have used a 13 inch one before. The portability is lovely, but the screen does get a little on the smaller side there. As a computer scientist, I have worked with many systems. Also had seen many while I worked as a helpdesk.
From 10 inch netbooks to 18 beasts. I remember seeing a 19 inch one too. This size preference of me also counts for desktop PC's I prefer a mITX or mATX (in case SLI is wanted). With a good looking small case such as the inwin 901, or the D-frame mini. But I like portability a lot so I stay with laptops. I've done my fair share of research, wasn't quite 100% satisfied until the release of the 14"powerhouse. I knew I wanted it, and got it immediately. Still satisfied -
Mine's a 15.6" GX660 and it works really well. It's not too big either. Don't know how a 17" one would fare in portability.
-
17" or larger... even my work laptop is 17". I carry them around easily in a backpack when I travel. I have never had an issue with it being too "bulky"... tried one of those laptop/tablet things and it made me cringe...
-
I have a 15.6" laptop and its just a tad small for me, I can live with it, BUT.
What I really want and seems absurdly obvious to me is a narrow bezel display panel for a 17.3" screen in a barely over 15.6" form factor, or maybe an 18" narrow bezel in a regular sized 17.3" form factor. There are tons of narrow bezel desktop options, and a few rare laptop, so it obviously can be done.moviemarketing and chris_laptopfan like this. -
I had a 17" and it was nice but heavy and hot. Now I have a 14.6" and I love the size and weight. What I miss is the dedicated numpad so my next one will be a 15.6" for sure. I play games mostly in bed and if I need a larger screen I'll hook it up to an external monitor at my desk.
-
I played on 11 ( too small
) , 15, 17, now I have 15.6 ( I'm not happy to the end ) . Next is 17.3. Heavier but the best for me .

17". Just buy a good carrier bag to go with it and you're golden.
-
17" for me, but I have played on 14" 1080p with my wife's laptop and have to scale up UI's in games since I can't see them.
-
Moved from M11X R3 to my current monster as a main development machine.
Can't go back...

One thing that seems lacking in 17" models is 3k or 4k displays. They would seem to be a better fit for larger size display than 15". -
For me, 15'' is ideal. 17 are usually very heavy and much less portable. If I want to stay in the same place, I can just use some external monitor
-
17" gets my vote.

Back in the days I had a brick for a 17" Dell Inspiron 11lbs (before they bought AW) then went back to 15.6" due weight and easier to travel with for a long time. But, now with thin chassis laptops like the GS70, I think it's time to go back to 17". So 17" in a thin chassis for me.

I always have gotten 15" laptops in the past but I will be ordering a 17" laptop relatively soon.
Just have to make up my mind if its the ASUS G751 or the MSI GT72. -
17inch all the way, gaming on 15inch is such a pain in my exp.
-
Both. For me it is more important what the thickness/weight/design/specifications/features are. I had only used 15.6" laptops before moving up to 17.3" with this Clevo that I currently own. It's less convenient to carry around than my previous notebooks, but that's more to do with the thickness and weight than the screen size (being my first true 'gaming laptop'). Soon I will be returning to 15.6" - because the particular model I have set my sights on is only available in 15.6". But that's OK, because my past experience has shown that I am perfectly comfortable with either 15.6" or 17.3".
- 17.3" lets you see what's on the screen more easily and provides a more 'immersive' experience when consuming multimedia. Usually the manufacturer can fit more ports, storage drives, bigger cooling fans and whatnot into the larger chassis.
- 15.6" is more portable in that it can fit into travel bags easier and take up less room, while being lighter. They also have the advantage of having naturally higher PPI screens for slightly better clarity as their bigger brothers when running the exact same resolutions.
17.3" models are usually slightly more expensive than 15.6" models with all other specifications being equal, just for the fact that more raw material was required to build them in the first place!
Both have advantages and disadvantages. -
17.3 till the day I die.. I can't tolerate anything smaller..
-
Why isn't there a poll for this? I really wanna see which percentage of people think that size matters.
-
14-15" here. I don't think there's a "one size fits all" solution. 15" is good for portability. 17" is good for more of a DTR. It seems that 15" can manage the heat well for a single mobile CPU and GPU while remaining under 6-7 lbs and under 1.5" thick. Anything much bigger is usually too cumbersome for people to manage on a regular basis for transporting somewhere.
Edit: Ha... I already replied to this thread... But I tallied the votes based on those that replied to the thread:
15": 19
17": 21
I'd say it's pretty even.octiceps likes this. -

I have went back and forth a couple times. My current is 15 simply because of weight and I use on my lap alot.
While the gs70 is a step in the right direction with weight and portibilty the gs60 is better still. -
Barely read through a few posts and I gotta say... Everyone is crying over 17 inchers being too heavy? ? How weak are you? Even if a laptop weighed 25 lbs I wouldn't give a rat's butt , that tells me it's built right, sturdy, etc. Plus it feels cool carrying it and gives you a pump when you carry it in one arm. And it just feels professional.
Super light ultra books remind me of skinny loser stuck up businessmen or fat***es ' trying to be classy.
Come on now these are laptops for serious tasks, not web browsing and typing up an essay. Y'all need chromebooks or something of the sort, better yet get a pull-up bar if you're crying over 2lb weight differencesMarecki_clf and moviemarketing like this.
