OK, reality check time...
I've teased them before for this too... but let's face it, anything over 15lbs is less than ideal as it becomes unwieldy in one hand.
We cannot assume everyone (especially here) is an athlete.
Note its not just the weight but the size of these laptops which causes this.
Then again, most of these 15-17" laptops are within a couple pounds of each other and all are beneath 10lbs.
A single 12-pack of your favorite beverage is around 10lbs... if you cannot lift that kind of weight in one hand and be quite capable with it (and quite easily), you are nearly inhumanly weak and definitely sickly for an adult. Let's face it... they CAN lift it and it isn't that big of a deal. It's a number that they believe is better when its smaller and they have long since stopped caring what the number really means.
Most "mother ship" women's purses are over 10lbs. Your girlfriend and your mother probably carry more weight with them every day and everywhere than these guys are complaining about.
I've seen an 11-yr-old girl carry a large 17" 10+lb laptop all day without tiring and without damaging the laptop. Let's face it... even the most out-of-shape guy here probably has more strength and endurance than that very skinny little girl.
Can you imagine these guys straining to lift a 6-pack because its an adult beverage instead of a soft drink? (yes that weighs more by somewhere around a pound)
As for 15 vs 17... I tend to prefer the 17" at home as the weight or size is of no concern. I tend to pick 15" when travelling , because smaller than that feels cramped and silly and tends to fit on airplanes and cramped server rooms easily. 17" tends to not fit in server room holders and airplanes.
I could completely understand someone preferring smaller than 15" for size if they were smaller than me physically. -
Sigh.. Like my 4lb blade. Not going back to bricks. Has nothing to do with whether I can lift or carry the 9lb (without adapter) Samsung 17 that it replaced.
It's more comfortable to use on my lap desk for extended periods. What is wrong with wanting a fast and light laptop? Nothing.
If you want a 17 inch 9-12lb laptop, go for it. Don't presume that anyone that doesn't has some physical strength problem, it's childish.octiceps, n=1, Ningyo and 1 other person like this. -

The main mobility issue I had with my 17.3" ASUS G73JH was its footprint, not weight. Some of my classes were in cramped rooms and we sat in these tiny chairs with a built-in table attached by an arm. There was barely any room for a standard college textbook or notebook, let alone a humongous gaming laptop.
I couldn't use my machine without it overflowing the sides or almost falling off. Notes/textbooks had to be placed on my lap. If I opened the lid to an acceptable viewing angle (crappy TN screen), I would hit the back of the head of the student sitting in front of me.liverkick likes this. -

Yeah, laptop size and weight is all about mobility and usability. Not whether or not we can lift a 12lbs laptop or not. There are definitely extremes at both end. I just like a well thought out and engineered laptop that minimizes weight and thickness, and not to the point to just be the thinnest because they can, and compromise heavily in other areas like heat and user upgrades.

Thanks for all the responses guys! This has been pretty interesting to see ...
And yes, I probably should have put a poll on this thread.(Next time!)
With the GS70 as a 17" thin gaming laptop, is that more appealing to 17" owners and 15" owners? Since it combines the best of both worlds, thin with a large screen.
Or do you guys still prefer larger 17" desktop replacements like the GT72 Dominator or the ASUS ROGs? -

Was close to buying the GS70 last year but in the end decided against it due to the large "Gaming Series" dragon coat of arms logo on the lid. I use laptop not only for gaming but also for work, meetings with clients, etc. - this kind of logo does not look professional.
Have been considering the Aorus X7 Pro, but disappointed they chose to use 3GB VRAM version of the 970m instead of the one with 6GB VRAM. For such a powerful configuration (and costly purchase), they are starting out of the gate already below recommended specs for some games which ask for 4GB or more VRAM. In the coming years there will be more games that eat VRAM.
Probably will buy Gigabyte P35x v3 or Sager/Clevo P650S with 980m 8GB VRAM within the next 30 days. -
Am I on the right track here?
Because IMHO I think having an alien head or gaming logo is a good conversation starter in some cases but then again I'd be embarrassed if a girl was checking me out at a coffee shop/library etc. And saw that gaming logo... Lol
That's why I'm in love with Clevo/sagers -
I also must say I had a toshiba satellite l305D and it was pretty heavy compared to modern 15.6 inchers. Also had a asus g71? And it was almost the same weight as the toshiba while toting a 17 inch screen
-
I just love large desktop replacements cause once I take It out and set it up somewhere with a power outlet I feel so cozy and secure knowing I got tons of computing power and can pack up within 30 seconds and be on the move again

Not that the Extreme L33t Gamer laptop branding seems childish, just too flashy, kinda weird for business meeting and the MSI logo is just butt ugly. Why does the branding for Apple, HP, Clevo or Sager seem more appropriate? They are simply a little more understated, less tacky.HTWingNut likes this. -

You would think they'd eventually see me playing Metro 2033 or Trine 2 in 3D inbetween classes and realize it's a strong PC... but no. They just look at it's size and go "pshh I'd never want one of those I feel sorry for you" and I just smile and say "I don't mind".

All I see in this thread is some people want thin and light with power, some want larger display and upgrade ability at the cost of size. No one is wrong, and no one is changing anyone else's mind. Like all arguments on the internet, always.

Note that what you like is what you like... but don't tell us its due to the weight because it frankly isn't.
If it makes your lap feel good, you just like smaller numbers, or think its so cute, or like how it matches your outfit, then fine.
No one thinks you or anyone else here has a physical strength problem or that it has anything at all to do with why you chose the laptop.
Indeed that is the main point. I use real-life examples and real weights of other things to bring a perspective and show just how ridiculous it is to be worried about a few pounds either way.
Simply put, the weight has stopped mattering as much as what you are trading for it.
If a laptop can be 4lbs and have all the power, cooling, and features it needs (like connectors and ports...) then there is no need to have more weight.
The thing is... this usually isn't the case. you are trading something for that 4lb weight. (at the very least, money and thus value)
The problem is the degree of value for weight and fashion over function.
Two things:
1) Having hot little laptop on lap is not wise for a male wishing to reproduce... don't let me stop you if you think its more comfy though.
2) I find your name-calling to be entertaining in light of its irony. -
On a more mirthful note...
Yesterday I had an experience that should give you an idea of how I feel typing on a 14" or smaller laptop.
I was working in a 1st grade classroom and the only chair that wasn't being used was one of those chairs for 1st graders.
The teacher steps out of the room to deal with a less-than cooperative group of children. (The teacher's assistant is reading with the remaining kids.)
I sat down and started to work on the teacher laptop.
The roughly 5-foot-tall teacher returns to the room and starts laughing uncontrollably.
You have to understand... here is a 6'1" 215lb guy sitting in a tiny chair hunched over this tiny 1st-grader desk working on a small laptop. (with my appropriately sized laptop tools... which are also tiny)
She said I looked like a giant in comparison. (I'm not really that big of a guy.. taller side of average.)
Granted everything in the room is designed for 1st graders and their very petite teacher.
The teacher apologized but I just smiled. (I agree it probably looked quite comical.)
The kids asked how I work on such small things when I am so big. (lol)
I told them "very carefully". -

Similar thing happened to one of our suppliers. He was the engineering manager and we all come in with our big bulky laptops, he's a big dude and whips out his Surface and pecking at its tiny keyboard with his monster hands. We all kind of looked at each other and laughed. Of course I was interested in it because it was the new Surface Pro 3. -

Yeah, the Windows Classic Theme was just one more thing they removed starting from Windows 8. I personally never cared for it, but I know many others did, so GG M$ for killing user choice.
