theres always going to be a newer and better laptop available I understand that, however with all this talk of 9600m and penryn become more main stream I'm in a bit of a quandry. I could buy a decent xps m1530 today but I'm not in a huge rush, so I'm wondering is there a price drop in the 8800m gt expected around the end of summer?

I understand everything is outdated in a few months I'm just trying to get the best bang for my buck, but with an emphasis on dx10 comparability should I need it. This isn't a "what should I buy" thread but rather when, and what's incoming in the next 6/7 months.

    Cheers in advance

I should also add I'm not hugely after the 8800 or 9600 in particular, rather GPU power and what's incoming that will affect current card and laptop prices.

yes, there will soon be a price drop on the 8xxx series graphics.
but since there are some problems with nvidias new cards and cards are beeing delayed, the price drop will probably be delayed a little bit also.

// edit, i´ve read a clever guy writing something like : i´ve you always wait for something better to come around, you will never get anything... ;-)

true enough but these are the right cards 8700 and better possibly dropping in price at the right time. Or so it would appear.

I hate to use the word "wait", because as schoko mentioned, you'll never get anything if you keep waiting. However (another word I hate to use :p), the Penryn's should be more affordable by the time the 9 series rolls out. It's a tough choice, but in the end, I'd suggest waiting until you can get both a Penryn and a 9 series card in the same package.

I've a sneaking suspicion that dell will stick the penryn in the xps 1530, seeing as they've made their way to the inspiron range now, question is will they shove the 9600m in too, it would be my preferred package but it seems like a huge change in direction for that model.

Would also like to see a big price drop in 8800 gtx in clevo rebrands, all as a consequence of the 9xxx series release.

I've no issues with the word wait :p

Where are you getting that info from? Nvidia has pricing slots for various graphics cards, I doubt the prices will change that much.

when that exact time of the price drop will be i do not know.

whenever a new series of graphics cards or CPU´s or whatever hits the market the "old" stuff is of course getting cheaper. was always like that, and it will be like that for quite a while. you don´t need to be able to look into the future, to see the price dropping. it´s just plain and simple the laws of the market.

well the desktop cards will be the first to experience the price drop, and when the 9xxx series is widely available for the notebook market the same story will happen with the mobile gpu´s of the 8xxx series.

at least for now nvidia seems to have some trouble getting their desktop cards available at the market.

the 8800 will never fit into the xps 1530

they require too much power and create too much heat for that frame

stop waiting and buy it if you need it

Dude, neveryoumind about the price. If you WANT it, NEED it, and can AFFORD it, GET IT and don`t look back. Technology changes faster than you can gather money so get it now and USE it. In the future you`ll change it if necessary, but stop waiting because you`ll be the one losing out on a lot of games and such.

8600 is underpowered so thats why I want to wait for a 9600m or 8700/8800 price drop
