Title basically says it all lol![]()
So yeah, 16:9 aspect ratio laptops are coming out more and more on the market(notably in 16.4" and 18.4" sizes) and it seems that it's a good thing for viewing movies, but how is it for gaming? Well some games don't really mind, some games do and some games actually already have built in resolutions for 16:9 aspect ratios.
I'm basically making this thread so we can compile a list of games which do/don't support 16:9 widescreen.
So people who have some games, can you confirm whether or not:
a) said games support 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions(and which ones would be nice)
b) if they don't support the resolution, will they run properly(with or without the presence of black side bars)
List so far:
- CS:S and TF2 confirmed to have 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions available.
- Crysis can manually adjust the resolution
- CoD4 and World at War support 16:9 aspect ratios.
- Fallout 3
- Far Cry 2
- WoW
- Unreal Tournament 3
I'm looking around, but I can't exactly find a concrete list concerning games, so I figured I'd start one and we could all pitch in![]()
Thanks for contributing! ^_^

Most Valve games seem to have 16:9. I guess? The option to set it to 16:9 is there anyways. Tested this on CS:S and TF2.

well i play most games on 1440 x 900 or 1280 x 720 .. and even some games like most wanted and many other have only 1024 x 768 and it just work fine and full screen ..
i also tried crysis warehead 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 and also it worked fine ..
my screen is 17'' and i have 8600m gs -
Thanks for the input ^_^ So seems Source games won't be much of a problem. The thing is I'm wondering which games just work(but there'll be black bars on the side) and which ones will actually have a 16:9 aspect ratio resolution. I'll update the list ^^
Kazzaz, 1440x900, 800x600 and 1200x800 are still 16:10 aspect ratio games though. I'm questioning about the new 16:9 aspect ratios such as 1600x900 or 1900x1080 which are like widescreen TV aspect ratios. -
If the game can't adjust the resolution dynamically, then it is probably crap made by a crappy company.
I know for Crysis, you can manually specify the length and width. For CoD 4 and WaW, you can also specify the resolution. -
Thanks! ^^ I'll add those
Well the reason I'm making this list is because some games were made before the time 16:9 screens became common, so they might not have 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions. Easier for people to know which games run with black bars and which ones really run with a set 16:9 resolution -
Unreal Tournament 3 supports the 16:9 res' as well.

I think the list covers both 16:10 and 16:9. -
Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and WoW all support 16:9.
I doubt you'll find that many games that don't to be honest. -
Well it's mostly a question of games which actually have 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions, not just support. I'm pretty sure most games will run, despite the screen and provide black bars on the sides...
The list is mostly to know if some games have the 1600x900 or 1900x1080 resolutions built into their settings.
Updated the list btw ^_^ -
most modern games support 16:9 res. 16:9 desktop monitors are rolling out as well.
imo widescreen is better for fps' and only. a wider field of view=pnwage. this only applies to real widescreen though, not the crappy cropping practice.
