Im getting a M1530 soon and it will have a 8600m gt, i know its a decent card but I will have to play a lot of newer games @ 1280*800 or 1440*900 and they may not look great on the 1680*1050 screen...

The laptop will also be used for college and video editing etc so I do need the screen real estate... Will 1280*800 etc look ok on 1680*1050 screen, or is a 1440*900 screen a better option (so less scaling occurs)

    Thanks :)

IMO the 1440x900 would be perfect, I have it on a 17 inch and its a great res i think. and yes less scaling would be good.

Thanks for the quick reply, I was also leaning towards 1440*900, its hard to imagine the res of my 20" screen on a 15" screen

One of my friends has an Inspiron 1520 with a 1680x1050 resolution. I thought it was overkill at first, but once I got used to it, it's pretty damn amazing. Also, scaling from 1680x1050 to 1280x800 isn't bad at all. I play CoD4 on my 20" desktop at 1280x800, the IQ is practically the same.

Its so hard to decide! I have good eyesight, and if the scaling isnt really an issue then I should probably go for the 1680*1050

I will try and find a 1680*1050 screen on a 15" Sony Vaio in the Sony Center or somewhere....

1680x1050 is truly amazing. It was small at first (I was usingf a 19'' 1280x1024, and my dad's laptop is 1280x800 on a 15'').

1440x900 would be good if can stand jaggies. I mean, 0xAA 1680x1050 looks about the same perfwise than 1440x900 2xAA (although you will have a GDDR3 card, so the 1680x1050 perf will be better than mine). I can stand 0x in 1680x1050 but not 1440x900 or 1280x800.

I don't tend to use AA at all in multiplayer games, there is no need for it, If you stand still long enough to notice jaggies your gonna get owned! :D

I just heard about the M1530 grainy screen issue :/ which screens are less likely to be defecive because that may ultimately influence my decision

    The 1440X900 screen is brighter

I got the 1680x1050 on my Inspiron 1520 because I needed/wanted the extra real estate for school work. Many games scale wonderfully, especially COD4. I love the 1680x1050 resolution; I wouldn't want anything less after using it.

However, I recommend that you see it for yourself. The text IS small for many people and you may not like it. Until you see if for yourself, don't order it. You don't want to get stuck with a high resolution screen that you don't like.

I've had a 1680x1050 15" panel on my acer for a couple of years and I do find it abit eye straining not to mention more of a strain for the GPU at native. Hopefully the 1440 i'll find will be a nice balance of screen size and good gaming performance at native.

1440*900 screen is the limit for a 15", they are both 720p, if you want more go external! + a brighter screen is always better!

For a all rounder screen go 1440*900

For photo editing go 1680*1050 screen
