These monitor specs are from the Alienware Area-51M R2, but I'm sure there are other laptops with 17" UHD monitors and RTX cards (such as Clevo X150).

Whenever I look up posts about monitor refresh rates or response rates, the sheer majority of them focus on esports, twitch shooters and other competitive games. I'm not interested in those personally, and while I do like FPS games, I play single player story mode exclusively. Off the top of my head, I want to play Halo MCC, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Witcher 3, Resident Evil, XCOM 2 and all the Prince of Persia titles released after Sands of Time - basically, I want to catch up on the older AA or AAA games I missed out on first.

Frankly, either a UHD 60Hz or a FHD 144Hz+ is going to be a light year leap forward. Right now, my idea of "wow" graphics is most Nintendo-made games on the Switch, as well as ultra graphics on WoW while playing on a 27" FHD at a gaming cafe.

I'm coming from a 12" MacBook and the 3rd gen. iPad Air, as well as the Surface Pro 4 years ago, and all these have high PPI (220 to 260 ppi); I can definitely tell the difference between an iPad 2 (1024x768 on a 9" screen) and the latest iPad Air (2048x1536). At work, I use two 23" FHD displays, and I can't see the pixels unless I stick my face on the monitors.

So based on this, and knowing my gaming preferences, I'm leaning towards the UHD monitor. Is there anything else I should be considering, though?

If the response time is indeed 25ms, that's awful.

High refresh rate gaming >>> 4K

I would take one of the 1080p options.

This. It's all preference to be honest but once you got 144hz+ you won't go back.

4K isn't worth it for me. The GPU's can't reliably drive all those pixels above 60fps consistently.

I second this. Once I got a high refresh rate screen for my laptop, I couldn't go back to using standard 60 Hz screens. They piss me off because of how laggy they look.

Everything looks very lifelike in games at 120+ FPS because the motion is super smooth. That's definitely the better experience over 4K gaming in my opinion.

Big one up for 144hz...this coming from a guy that was anti anything over 60 until I saw it with my own eyes..4k is pointless unless the screen is over 43in and you are closer than 4 feet to it

This is late, but I went with a FHD/3ms/300Hz option. Thanks for your opinions!

This may sound ridiculous, but I went with 300hz solely because the 144hz was out of stock, and I got sick of waiting. I’ve been researching and laptop hunting pretty much all summer and ordered and canceled two models before deciding on my current choice (Alienware 51m R2).

You won't be disappointed! As much as I don't like Dell anymore, the Area 51M is objectively an excellent laptop in terms of specs. It'll last you quite a long time.

I have so many old games to catch up on that I doubt I’ll be left wanting for a good while :p
