True, but then again he is replacing a 1 year old PC so I dont think he will have an issue in a year or 2 at that res with the specs it has.

    Am I missing something here?

First off, most people with WUXGA get it for the advantages it brings in other things being done on the computer, not just gaming. I’ve played in all resolutions scaled all the way down to 1024x768 AA with no problems. I do think the resolutions can be scaled down, unless I've missed something? Even playing at WSXGA I’m not missing out on anything, as I’ve not seen any distortion in quality while gaming at that resolution. Using desktop I do, not with gaming. And since I don’t use any resolution besides 1920x1200 for desktop, I’m not at all concerned about that. I would be more concerned by not being able to scale up, than I would be scaling down.

Exactly. I don't know how/why people get the impression that you HAVE to game at the native resolution. That's just the maximum supported resolution. I frequently play at resolutions less than native on my desktop LCD or notebook without issue. 1920x1200 gives you a great amount of desktop space, which I like. Granted it is a little overkill for a 17" notebook, but it's not a bad thing.

Yeah I have 1920x1200 res powered by an 8600mGT ddr2 and I game max settings in all of my games. The only one I turn down is UT3 from 5 to 4 and when I OC 5 is easy as pie at that resolution. Granted if it is only going to see gaming then yeah 1440x900 will be a longer lasting resolution, but even then I don't see anything stopping him from playing games at native with a 9800mGTS anytime soon.

I'd go with sager probably way better quality and will last longer. If you can spend $2000 theres really no need to buy a budget brand in my opinion.

    I love my Gateway 7811!

If you get the Gateway or consider it, please keep in mind that there is a good possibility you'll get a lemon. If that's the case, you have 14 days to exchange it for another one. My first 7811 had a bad screen issue (where you view it from the angle and see the "whiteness" or whatever). The second one I have still has the issue, but it's less than %5 (random number I came up with... you really have to look hard for it). As well as it runs just as cool as the previous one :)

Although, if your budget is $2000, then by all means, go all out :p I mean, look at my desktop in my sig! (I had a 3870X2, but traded it towards a 9800 GTX for folding purposes )

    Fixed Pixel Displays.

This doesn't mean you can't game in other resolutions, but in doing so you are scaling your image to fit on your display. Scaling an image to fit your fixed pixel display does degrade the quality of the image. This is acceptable to some, but for those looking for the absolute cleanest picture, that comes at the native resolution of the display.

I'll be the first to admit though, that the degradation in quality is becoming smaller and smaller and in many cases isn't even noticeable. But the above is the reason why some people prefer to stay at native.

Sagers are really nice and well worth the $$, but might be out of your price range.I would also go for the Gateway FX- 7811, best bang for your buck IMO.
Wile the orange trim on it might turn some people off, I would suggest going to see it in person and get your hands on one just to play around with it and get the overall feel for it.

+1 for Gateway P7811FX, no problems here other than 1 stuck pixel on the display. But look at what you get for the price:

    Core 2 2.26 w/ Centrino
    200 gig 7200 rpm hd
    nVidia 9800 GTS
    4 gigs DDR3
    HDMI, eSata, Raid
1920x1200 17" display (my favorite part of the laptop)

You know, if you're within 14 days, you can exchange it for another, right?

You could always opt to reduce the resolution and use some AA to smooth out the game. It has worked well in my experience, though I don't often play games where the lower resolution bothers me enough to get AA going. The only two games I did it with were Fable: Lost chapters (I hated seeing the jaggy arrows) and Morrowind (With all maxed out settings, game was still running @ 100+ fps in some places and didn't want to enable screen sync)

..or you can set nVida panel to Do Not Scale, which places black borders along smaller native screen. I like things pixel sharp, ymmv.
