This is the best performing driver I've tried so far (CoD4/TF2), but it also increased my temperatures by about 6C (~74C to ~80C). Going back to Dell 174.31 drivers for now

Yep this is the best driver so far. Nice and stable on CNC3, COD4, GOW, UT3. Haven't done 3dmark yet but most games are seeing a minmal fps boost.

Are these noted improvements noticeable over the 174.30?

They are working overtime with these drivers.

These incremental driver updates are kind of getting out of hand. Who's making them? Some L337 kids in a basement somewhere? (Rhetoric)

Meh. I received the impression that 169.25 was one of the most stable of the recent drivers, so I stuck with it. But if 174.74 is going to be one of those milestone ones, I might jump up to it.

They're weekly/nightly builds from Nvidia, they aren't really meant for everyday use.

I got a significal FPS boost from these ones,
    I went from 169.28 -> 174.20 -> 174.74

I tested oblivion, everything on very high,
All shadows maxed( int and ext),
self shadows off, and shadows on grass off..
the rest of the options are all maxed out
    1280x800

what else, oh yeah, the actual FPS,
*edit: the previous FPS on 174.20: subtract an average of 2~3 FPS on each score.
    Indoors min = 30, max 70, avg = 59

outdoors min = 15(heavily grassed areas, those with oblivion know where the game suffers the most), else, the min is like 20~22, max 59, avg 40~45.

    hope that helps..
oh, by the way i'm in honduras, so... local temp here always is around 30 - 35 C, so my card maintains a standard of 78~82 C... while heavy hours of gaming...

    No overclock.
    :)

Glad you guys are enjoying your next performance driver fix.

    *pats good old 169.25*

I'll just keep relaxed until the driver for the 8600m GT on Nvidia's site is updated.

There is some comfort in knowing I'm sticking with full releases, sort of like religion or having principles...

I used to install every single new release...it just gets old after about 40 driver installs.

Besides, I saw the biggest speed bump with 169.xx drivers. While 174 really seemed to improve Crysis and CoD4...I've already beaten CoD4 (so no point in improvement) and I only have the Demo for Crysis).

All of my games work just fine right now, so I am happy with 169.25.

Also, I think it might have to do with the MBP 8600 GPU in particular, but the 174 drivers would cause a freaky explosion of black rectangles on my screen every once in awhile, usually requiring a restart or logout to fix. So needless to say, that was my rollback.

    .74 makes a difference..

Btw, I continued tesing the drivers,
I got a temp decrease of like 5C...

and i turned on the self shadows and the shadows on grass on Oblivion, on heavily grassed areas
the lowest FPS is 12, max 25, avg 18...

    nice drivers i must say:O

I just upgraded from 174.31, I have a x205 sli1 and my 3dmark06 score dropped from 7278 to 7216, but I'm wary of the scores 3dmark06 gives it's always changing each time I tried with the 174.31. With 174.74 I can't really tell a difference with game performance in Call of Duty 4 it's on par with 174.31. I guess since with .31 I was already getting a steady 60 frames per second so I think I'm already at the point of no beneficial returns with these. I just wish with the next driver version they would implement sli antiailising, cause with it on, my frame rate drops badly and I have to disable it.

Update: ok I take it back about not noticing a performance increase, it does seem to speed up Call of Duty 4 more. I posted too early without actually playing long enough so now I've played for at least an hour with many different levels in single player and multiplayer and it seems to be more speedy. With fraps on, multiplayer gives me constant 60 fps and on single player it stays steady at 60 and sometimes drops to 30 and this is with max settings, af turned all the way up but aa disabled.

With these latest drivers, my 8600gt gives me a MUCH better framerate for maybe a minute or two longer in TF2, but then it quickly drops right back into the crapper. :(

The release notes promised OpenGL performance improvements, therefore, I give the driver a try with Quake 4, which uses openGL, it seems the game runs slightly better, about 5-6 FPS gains in areas that were previously more demanding, and the game in general runs smoother.

The down side of this release is if you didn't use the OEM inf supplied (you have to find the right one out of 55 of them), your powermizer might not work with the new driver; thus, result in temperature gain during 2D use.

Easy way to figure out which is your *.inf...

Find your stock drivers and look for what the inf is named.

For Toshiba x205 users it is nvco.inf

I'm prety sure the expiration date is a joke...all they did was insert ExpireDate into the ini which wouldn't do anything unless nvidia specifically had something in their drivers that would know what to do with that value.

EDIT: I just checked the INF on the 174.74 drivers I dl'ed.
No sign of EXPIRE DATE, so I'll never have to uninstall these( if it were even true)

    They were...

Even if you were to add the ExpireDate = 4/2/08
to one of the ini files, it still wouldn't do anything without actually being implemented in the nvidia driver itself.
