179.13 are new drivers released by Alienware. Supposedly are for mobile whereas 178.13 are for desktop. Reported to be fractionally better.

Alright.. I'll give this one a go.
-
Okay, I'll bite.
Let's just hope the Alienware mojo is as nontransferable as their warranties. -
Ok I tried it and i got 5 more marks in 3DMark06. prev it was 4474 with 178.13 and now i got 4479 with 179.13, so definitely a performance boost. Others pls post results, Thanks.

The only thing is hat this one is not signed.
-
Neither is 178.13 or 177.xy once you put the modded inf on. The only ones that will actually be signed is the dedicated Acer ones (or whatever other brand people have).

You think 5 measly points in 3dmark is a boost at all? That's absolutely no gain at all ingame!
In fact.. if you run 3dmark again, you might score 5 points lower. -
-
And yeah, run 3dmark 10 times, you will see 10 different results... -

Sorry for the double post, trying to edit but my connection is strugling right now... -
Oops, sorry i was not aware of the 3DMark marks, my bad people.
-
Actually sorry if i sounded too harsh
... Just take in count, unless you see a significant difference in the 3dmarks scores, it's just the same until you test the driver with games, why? Because is very probable that drivers that get similar 3dmarks scores, perform very different in games...
My advice, test new drivers with games instead of 3dmarks -
Hmmm... well yea I will test with games once I get back to UK, coz internet down in Saudi Arabia is only 256Kbps
so cant download any games, whereas in UK i have 24Mbps. I will post some results next week.

While I agree with the whole < 100 points in 3dmark06 being pretty much a "margin for error" thing, the concept of testing the drivers and getting within 5 points means that the baseline driver is as good as the previous one in most situations.
Multiple benchmarks ARE recommended as no single benchmark tells the full story. You might get a nice boost in crysis, but get constant crashes in most other games. (if all you play is crysis, then I guess that's the driver for you....)
What really matters is performance in the things you do play.
While no one plays 3dmark06... it does give a decent baseline and an improvement > 200 is usually noticeable in most games. -
179.13 doesnt stutter like sh*t comparing to 178.13

vicariouscheese Notebook Consultant
im really depressed because both 178.13 and 179.13 reduce my gpu temps by about 5C, but are glitchy with battlefield
i guess when i finally get over that game ill upgrade... -
Ok I found out one thing abt 179.13, I cannot increase or decrease my brightness with 179.13 installed, the fn+f7 and fn+f8 keys dont work and also changing the power management to power saver doesnt reduce the brightness as well. So I am back to 178.13 which according to 3DMark06 are same on the results.
