the new nvidia drivers offer ambient occlusion in games. Article on AO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_occlusion
These drivers are highly recommended on high-end systems.
*tip* do not turn AO on in Source games (counter-strike source,TF2,etc.,) as there is som issues with the way the source engine renders the AO.
There is a AO global tab for games that support it :
from Lv2go: Supported games.
Assassin Creed
Bioshock
COD4
COD:WAW
CS:Source
Company of heroes
crysis (warhead not suported)
devil.gif.gif may cry 4
Fallout 3
Far Cry 2
Half-life 2: Episode Two (only!!)
Left 4 Dead
Lost Planet
Mirror's Edge
The Call of Juarez
World in conflit
World Of Warcraft

what's the performance hit?
-
Are these any newer than the 180.84 dox version?
-
ambient occlusion kills your fps(and barely noticable honestly),even on my 9800 gtx.worthless
-
Ambient Occlusion!!
Oh w0wz0rz, now i can play crysis on very medium with 10 frames per minute
-
it decreases my performance but i can tell a huge difference. U can also turn it off, lol.
-
I lost 5-10 frames a second with AO on low with these drivers.
Nvidia should concentrate on speed, not extra effects. -
-
stick with official drivers. They are the most stable.
-
How do I turn off the Ambient Occlusion?
-
is this only in dx 10, or 9 as well?
-
Anybody has pictures? The wiki article didn't really help....
-
I installed it, but my frame rate dropped too low to play. That's why I want to turn AO off.
-
Why use that driver if you're not going to use AO?
-
The guys over on laptopvideo2go said it gave them a good performance boost.
-
I'm also interested in some comparison shots if anyone is willing to post them.
-
They definitely give you a performance boost. Went from 1731 with 181.00 to 1885 with these drivers in 3dmark06.
EDIT: here is a screenshot. you can see that the areas under the light are more lit than the rest of the room. This all would have been the same color before.
-
1024x768 with graphics settings on low and no comparison shot doesn't really do much for a comparison...
-
ill stick with windows 7 nvidia drivers, been the fastest/most stable so far for me.
-
-
OK these are the best drivers to date, if you use AO on high then you wont be able to play any game, it is that intense. As far as performance these are by far the best drivers to date, actually amazing really. Give them a shot they are really good.
ps. those that re worrying about not having the ability to use AO, dont worry, if you use AO -high (like i tried in cod4) your frames will go from 250 to 20, so it really isnt viable for in game for laptops yet. But if you turn it off, these are AMAZING drivers. -
You mean to tell us that there is a possibility that nVidia have actually made a driver that doesn't need tweaking by people like Dox to improve it?
-
AO is great, but not as great as Nvidia stated, i mean the Crysis Screens
-
-
Just tried this ambient occlusion thing and its pretty nifty. Barely take an FPS hit in Fallout 3 when I turned it on low and everything did look noticeably better.
-
I'm personally going to stick with 178.13 but 185.20 do look interesting, lets hope it's the start of something great
-
I'll install these on my 2nd desktop that has an 8800GT and give you guys comparison shots including framerate overlays unless someone beats me to it in about a half hour. Sorry, I don't have an nVidia based notebook but the shots will be to show the FSAO on vs off so it shouldn't really matter.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
dox is an amateur, and is highly overrated.
-
anyway here is some screenshots comparisons with AO-high and AO-off. The fps hit is drastic on high, which is a setting best left for high-end SLi systems.
this is with all settings on/maxed/2xAA/16xAF/trilinear/max textures.
With AO-high: frames-per-second was 19.
with AO-off: frames per second was 150
conclusion: It appears, in game, to make the game much more realistic. It appears objects have many more shadows and it makes it incredible to walk around, but unfortunately on high setting the game is really not playable on my rig. -
What about setting the AO to low?
Could you post comparison shots between AO Off, AO low, AO med, and AO high (accompanied by FPS count)?
Overall yes, I can see the differences, but for now they are not that huge.
The extra shadows indeed help out more in terms of realism, but they aren't that crucial.
It's a shame though the AO produces a large performance hit though. -
AO is a feature in DirectX 10.1, though there is no way of turning it off or on per say, as this nVidia driver manages to do.
-
From 150 -> 19? Wow! What a performance hit. No thank you AO.
-
Unfortunately these drivers don't have the AO option in XP, only vista. Even though FSAO is a feature of Shader model 3 and DX9c, and is not one of the exclusive features of SM4 and DX10.
-
is it just me, but i can't seem to notice any difference between those screenshots
-
-
How does one manage AO? I'm trying Crysis out with it, and don't see a difference. Couldn't find an option in the nVidia Control Panel for it.
-
I wouldnt put it on anything other than low, unless you have sli 9800s+ -
-
here are better screenies.
once again all settings maxed/2xAA/16AF/extra textures.
AO off:
AO-high:
-
It makes the windows look like crap.
-
Outside of crappy windows, I'm just not seeing anything.
-
59fps to 16fps? what a increase in performance
come on nvidia.
keep in mind these drivers are meant for desktop DX-10 GPU's,not mobility
AO-OFF=win -
I am not seeing any tangible difference in in terms of visual improvement.
It appears to improve the lighting on trees / grass but that isn't a big difference in a static picture. -
even on my overclocked desktop geforce 9800gtx
framerate hit is just too much
i dont need slightly prettier effects or slightly better lighting,or slighty better shadows.
gamer's want speed+better fps. -
with AO off on COD4 I have a couple texture issues. Depending on the angle I look at stuff, it will flicker between what's it's supposed to look like and black.
-
yeah, the windows are too dark. It'd make people hard too see.

Hey guys, if you're going to paste a screenshot, please paste a thumbnail (with a link to the full image) and not a full-size image. Thanks
-
Its like someone put shadows on Extreme High
-
On your second screenies, Naticus, I do see the images having less blurr and clearer shadows, but 4 times less the fps?
They could have at least inserted subliminal chicks shadows for that...
185.20 now with Ambient Occlusion!
