I've been told that there isnt a huge performance gain from upgrading from 1GB RAM to 2GB, mainly because not many programs can take advantage of the extra gig. True or false?

I can see a huge difference from 512 to 15xx on winxp system. I think its not necessary to upgrade from 1gb to 2gb..You wont see any difference in daily use.

In other words, most programs aren't 2 GB memory pigs ! And I am eternally grateful !

If you use large databases, Access might appreciate the additional memory. I leave it to others to comment about games.

That's a really general question, difficult to answer.

General stuff won't see any difference. What programs will you be running?

In that case, I'm moving it to the gaming section.

Games will definitely see the benefit, mostly the newer ones such as BF2 and Quake 4.

If you are gaming [newer ones as I said, and at higher settings], get 2GB.

Thing is it's not really a PERFORMANCE increase, but rather gives your games, programs, system more place for temporary storage of textures and such. So things are smoother, without the page file going off on your harddrive to give stuttering.

You might get PERFORMANCE increases, but it's not because your system is FASTER now, but is just running without any speed bumps.

If you can afford it, hell why not, but if it's a matter of starving for a couple weeks, then NO you don't need it.

1 gig is plenty at the moment.

Wait, ram's pretty cheap these days, so my suggestion is YES go get some. :D

    Cheers,
    Mike

Wow, 100 pounds is expensive, about $177 USD. You can get a 1GB stick of DDR for about $88 over here. A 1GB stick of DDR2 is $72.

Whoa expensive~! Ram over here is pretty cheap. I say for DDR2 for your laptop, avoid highpriced name brands.

Try Apacer, or cheapers rams with lifetime warranties. Avoid Corsair and those guys because they don't offer HUGE performance gains.

For double the price it's not worth it.

    Cheers,
    Mike
