hi guys, I just need a simple clarification here. I've been looking around for laptops with the ATI x1600 cards and I noticed that some are 128mb and some are 256mb. Are these two different cards? Or is the 256 dedicated+shared...an exact spec would be very helpful (and if anyone knows about any laptops with the x1600 could list them, that would be great...so far I've only seen Acer TM 8204, Acer Aspire 5672WLMi, Asus W3J and HP nx8430)

They are both the same cards, just one has 128mb and the other 256mb.there is lots of info in this forum about the x1600 and its differant amounts of ram, have a google search and look back a few pages in the 'Gaming(Software and Graphics Cards)' section.

Yep, both models are the exact same core, shipped with differing amounts of dedicated RAM. Using Hyper Memory, both can reach a maximum of 512MB. If you're planning on gaming on this GPU, I'd recommend the 256MB dedicated X1600.

Yeah, I also recommend the 256mb X1600 dedicated.

From what I haerd its tough (on the mobile x1600) to fully take advantage of the 256mb. But that may be hearsay.

all Im saying is that benchmarks arent all that different. I pulled around 3k stock and with a cpu and ram upgrade Ill do even better (not to mention a nicely tweaked omega driver, but Im staying catalyst). The 256mb card does like 3800, and thats with twice the ram. Yes its slightly faster, but not by a huge amount. Its the core not the amount of ram that makes the difference.

With Hypermemory and nothing tweaked the X1600 runs really nice with games and nothing stutters at all(BTW you forgot the S/Z96j for the X1600). Also you would think it runs really hot, but its pretty well cooled and in some mainstream notebooks(MBP) they underclock the GPU for cooling.
