Is it just me or did 2012 feel like it had very few great titles? particularly in the AAA space. there were alot more big indie games than usual, but the big blockbuster games felt like they took a hit. anyone else feel this way?

Don't think so, maybe just so many of the AAA games weren't up to your standards is all. Or there was just very few innovations or new. FC3 is just another Dunia crud from Ubisoft. AC 3 is just another AC game. Blops 2 is just another COD. BF3 is just another BC2. Diablo 3 is just another dungeon crawler. Dota 2 is just another MOBA. Guild Wars 2 was just another MMO. 2012 felt a whole lot of, just another. Darksiders 2 just another Darksider, just another God of War copy.

And there were very few games that worked from the getgo, too many day 1 patches and too many games unfinished and never will be.

I couldn't agree with you more. For me the Game of the Year...hands down...Kerbal Space Program, and it's only going to get better!

This is the world we live in. Indies take a chance on new IP's and game styles because they have nothing to lose. Big-budget publishers rarely stray from the formulae that have worked in the past, whether it's sequels (most of the time) or new IP's that play like old IP's (Sleeping Dogs ~ GTA, Dishonored ~ Bioshock, etc.). They're great fun, just like their predecessors, but we as a culture have rewarded big budget publishers of all kinds of media for giving us the same thing so long that they're unwilling to try something new because the risk is too great.

Dishonored and X-Com (looks like probably GOTY for many) were standouts. I am liking AC3, but then I've just liked that series since it's inception and will see it through to the end. There were games that are good but not AAA like Of Orcs and Men (haven't gotten far in it).

It has been the year of the high production value "indie" game though. With titles like Journey, FTL and Mark of the Ninja along with many others.
