I'm looking at both the Sony FZ, which (I think) has the 256MB 8400 and the cheapest new Apple MBP, which has the 128MB 8600.

I'm not well versed on how much gfx ram affects performance, so do you guys think the memory difference would negate the 8600M GT's performance lead?

No the 8600GT is still faster as it has more stream processors

Depends on the price difference of the systems and what you are going to use them for.

8600 GT would give you better perfomance even though it has less memory, especially since it can use the system's memory to make up for the 128 mb that it is missing.

Go for the 8600 GT, it's more powerful

I think the historically poor chassis design of the MBP---which often leads to overheating with underclocked midrange GPU's---will partially negate the performance of the 8600 GT inside of it.

The 8600M GT should score about twice as high as the 8400M GT (2000ish to 4000ish) in 3dmark06.
