Mostly depends on what games the computer may be running. The X3100 should be able to run games released up to maybe late 2004 mid 2005 fairly well. I have not played or used any other ATI GPU than the fairly old X series, you should go to wikipedia and look up ATI graphics cards, they have a table that should tell you everything you could want to know about each one made to this day. Be sure to be looking at the mobile GPU's in the tables. If it will be running the older era games ive said the X3100 should be fine. The X3100 is also great for battery life, but at the cost of performance of course.

Not only does the X31000 lack the capability to run certain game effects, it also delivers poor performance as well as hit-or-miss compatibility. Just because a game is old enough to run on this GPU never guarantees that it'll run.

    Scratch it off the list.

As for the ATI 4330, it is an entry-level discrete card. It'll deliver better performance than any integrated solution on the market, but it is still entry level with respect to other discrete solutions. However, if you plan to play games that aren't very demanding, the ATI card should suffice.

X3100 was never "intended" to be able to run games. Mostly for internet media and to be able to run aero.

Yes, that is true. It was intended for mobility, minimal functionality and minimal power consumption. There is no question about that.

So why is it on the short list for games, then?

To me because people who got it thought they could cut costs a bit with it but still wanted to have a bit of fun or were too cheap to afford a dedicated solution.

It really depends on what games you play. Older games or if you're on a budget, might not require/allow those cards.
