general guideline( i know its not perfect)

the 1st number is the generation number, 7400 is Geforce 7 and 8600 is Geforce 8.
The last 3 numbers are the model number, 300,400, 500=low end 600,700=mid-range 800,900=high end.

General rule of thumb, new generation of a certain model is better than the previous generation of that model. Example, 8400>7400 and 8600>7600

Another general rule of thumb, mid-range of a new generation tend to be equal to the high end of previous generation. Example, 7600GT=6800GT and 8600GT=7800GTX or 7900GS

The same rule can be applied to ATI cards and comparison between ATI and Nvidia cards.
The 2*** series is on par with the Nvidia 8*** series
the 1*** series on par with 7***
the 0*** on par with 6***

The same last 3 number rules apply here. so example generally speaking a X1400=7400 and 8400>X1400 etc
