I was originally interested in purchasing either a dell e1505 or hp 5000t, but after doing some research I came upon the acer 5672 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115246
and asus s96j. My main question between the acer and the asus is will a 256mb x1600 perform significantly better than a 128mb x1600? I don't need killer graphics, as long as I can run Counter-strike source or battlefield 2 decently then I'm good. Also, if anyone knows how does the 256mb x1400 stack up against a 128mb x1600?

Yes, the 256mb X1600 is much faster than the 128mb X1600.

But both of those two kill the X1400, the X1600 series is nearly twice as fast.

First - check if you see the term "HyperMemory". Often a 256M ATI card is 128M dedicated and 128M shared.

That said, I don't think the X1400 can really take advantage of 256M of memory, so I think it would go:

    256M X1400
    128M X1600 - much better than 256M X1400
    256M X1600 - marginally better than 128M X1600

Also, I think any of those card can handle BF2 or counterstrike, but I'm not a gamer so check the reviews.

I think the only substancial diference is from the x1400 to any of that version of the x1600. Battlefield and counter strike will run very well on any x1600, if you can get the 256mb version, it just got to be better in some way.

Ok as the name suggests i have bought my first laptop and it is coming with an X1400 256mb card.

    What games can i play well with this on a Dell 6400 with a T7200 duo core, 2 Gb 667Mhz DDR2 with a X1400 256mb hyermemory card?

Thanks in advance for answering a n00b question,

You can play all games out right now, albeit at medium settings for the games such as Oblivion, or Fear. But games like HL2,Doom 3, Farcry, Riddick. They will all run at high and at your native res smoothly.

Thanks mate. I am thinking games like Quake 4, Half-life 2 and BFME 2, Dawn of War, FM2007, etc being able run them well.

FM2007 is Football Manager 2007 a soccer management sim.

Good news on the other games though as I am not really an early adopter of games.
