    As the title says

    First laptop and I am deciding between a dell or hp

    both 2.2 Ghz dual core intel
    and 3Gb ram

    any advice

    and 512MB won't make a lick of difference compared with 256MB either. GT version all the way.

    8600M GT 256mb DDR3 is the best version of the card currently. (Check the memory type).

    Forget GPU's memory. Take 8600GT and bump the system's RAM instead of graphic card's RAM surely it will alot help.

    is 2.2 Ghz enough
    250 gb hard drive enough?
    its a 17" so will games play well on it?
    is $1,700 worth the price? its a dell inspiron 1720

    why dont you go with the XPS 1530, it has the faster version of the 8600GT, you could get a nice 1530 for 1700 as well.

    for a processor 2ghz is enough and ram 2gb is good. games will play well but for some u will have to turn down the resolution

    The Dell XPS m1530 has the Nvidia Geforce 8600GT GDDR3 256MB. If you want a 17" laptop their are better options than the Dell. You could get a laptop with the 8700GT then.
