I'm hopefully going to get a laptop pretty soon, but I'm not sure on how much budget I'm going to spend. I want a gaming laptop (it's for uni but screw portability, I'm well used to lugging around loads of crap for my laptop and I want good gaming capabilities), and I'm wondering on the performance difference between the 280M and the 260M. How much of a difference is to be expected due just to the GPU?

I'd ask the same thing about the ATI cards except the majority of the mid-high range gaming laptops I've seen have either the 260M or the 280M. Thanks a lot for any info you can shed on the subject (I've been out of the loop for quite a while now).

from what i've heard 10% difference is to be expected
now the question is, is whether that 10% or so is worth an extra $300 dollars between the laptop with the 260 vs the 280?

Single cards, probably anything with a 9800M GTX, HD4850/HD4870, 260M or 280M would work great.

All fall in the same level of power, with around 10% difference in performance.

If you want high end gaming that will last a bit longer, you are going to need crossfire or SLI.

If there is a 300dlrs difference between 260m and 280M, I would go with 260M and then overclock it if needed.

That said, I am saving to get a W90 :p so I will be spending quite a bit of money.

All who say, just overclock the GTX 260M and you will have GTX 280M performance are forgetting that you can overclock the 280, too, so it will be the same speed difference always.

300$ difference is for SLI difference between 260m and 280m. I think 300$ is real cheap for 1gb SLI upgrade as 88m was 1000$ expensive than 87m SLI when it came out.

Most laptops with the 280M are around $300 more expensive than those with the 260M due to the fact that 280M only comes in 17" factors whereas you can get 260M in 15". It's not only due to the GPU, but if I want a 280M it'll cost me around $300 extra. If the performance difference is only 10% I hardly think it's worth it IMO.

Now I just have to see if I can afford one of those dual GPU babies...

Yes, I also agree. The only way to get a GTX 280M is in 17 inch laptops while 15 inchers are limited to the GTX 260M. The $300 difference is mainly because of the base price of two different laptops.

I was inferring to the standalone cards. Some vendors sell the GTX 260M for $480 and the GTX 280M for $490, a difference of $10.

    10-15% difference between the 2

that is with them @ stock

you can have a 280 in 15 inchers the clevo 15 inch and the m15x can support them they run hotish.... but they will run.... the clevo does run cooler then the m15x BTW

if your goign for the ASus , the m17 from AW was jus confirmed for 4850 in Xfire which will make it come out to about the price of an asus i would highly reccomend you look into that

I would pay 300$ more and get 280m even if its said that its only 10% more faster which I dont believe.
