So, I currently have a 2 year old rig that's still fine to play most games but I could definitely use a boost. When I bought it, it set me back around £1,200 and I'm not looking to spend that much again.

I've found a laptop with a 660M, 15.6" 1920x1080 screen and i7 at 2.4GHz for £600 give or take (I don't need an OS or any HDD as I have spares so I can get a decent discount).

My question is, how much of a performance boost would I see? A laptop with a 670M is around £130 more expensive and for only a 10% speed boost it seems pointless, plus I hear that the 660M is highly overclockable due to the Kepler architecture being more efficient and less power hungry.

I also don't want to have to upgrade within a year or two so I want this to last, even if I can't buy something with a 7970m or 675m or 670mx for a similar price.

Basically, unless I'm going to double my FPS in most games, I'm not sure the £600 is worth it. Although, having said that, I hope to sell my current 17" monster to help cover a lot of that cost.

The 660m will be significantly faster than the 285m. You should easily see 50% FPS improvement but likely much more. A huge difference at lower resolutions, but 50-100% improvement at 1080p. The only reason for this is the 128-bit bus of the 660m vs 256-bit of the 285m. If you can find a 670m or 670mx the performance will be that much more significant.

I'm looking at a laptop with a 1080 screen and I'd also use it plugged into an external monitor at the same resolution. 50-100% boost is good enough I guess, especially if I can sell my laptop soon and end up not paying much for the upgrade.

Now I just have to search online to see if there's anywhere cheaper than pcscpecialist from which to buy it from. I swear there was a guide here on the forums that listed the best online retailers in the UK but I can't find it...

EDIT: I'm an idiot, found the post!

Yeah, I saw that but it's an extra £500 just for that that 7970m.

I can get the 15.6" laptop with the 3630qm and 660m for £650 right now including VAT with no HDD or OS from pcspecialist.

Thanks for the help though! Sempre bom ver outros brasileiros aqui!

You will also see some additional performance boost in recent games resulting from upgrading your CPU. These days more and more games make better use of faster CPUs.

Have you considered upgrading your Clevo? W870/W860CU I believe support 6970/6990M which can be found like 200-250.

That's a bloody amazing deal! I bought my laptop for that price but only i5 and 650M. That makes me sad :(

Well it was best deal at the time (months ago) sooo... oh well, I'll survive. Plus, it came with HDD and OS!

Yeah, lack of OS and HDD saves me about £100 so don't feel too bad! Laptop prices have actually come down a lot over the past 2 years, at least compared to when I bought my current rig.

Well damn, you just made my choice a whole lot harder.

Much appreciated though! Still not sure I can go above the £700 mark but I'll see...

EDIT: US sites? Not sure it would be that cheap once international shipping and possible tax is added.

That's a lot better than anything else I could find here for a similar price but I think it might be a bit much. I'll probably just upgrade again in 2 years and settle for the 660M for now.

It's tempting, but probably just not feasible on my budget.

Still, the jump from a 1.6GHz i7 and the 285m to a 2.4GHz i7 and the 660m should be fairly noticeable at least.
