Make sure you've installed the latest drivers from Microsoft's website. I too use one with my PC, but it does not work with some games, simply because not all PC games support game controllers natively. Also, some games you need to start up with the controller already plugged in, instead of plugging it in after you've started the game.
I said natively above because if the game itself does not let you configure the controller, you can use software such as Pinnacle Game Profiler to map the buttons on the controller to keyboard keys. This should allow you to play any game with the controller because it will emulate key presses.
Here's the link for Pinnacle: http://www.pinnaclegameprofiler.com/ -

I use xpadder its an easy to use programmer for the buttons and has downloable profiles for some games.

First of all you may want to look into XBCD drivers instead of Mircosoft they are much much better, and will allow you to play some games that MS drivers would not have propertly.
Like say Phantasy Star Universe it uses 2 preset axis, one for movment and another for camera. With MS drivers I could not control the camera because you could not change the axis, but with XBCD you can set any button to have a certian function and change axis around to be inverted or make them sliders, you can change analog to digital ect.
Beyond that you can use something like pinnacle and a few other programs that will map your joysticks input to keyboard outputs, but I find in most cases this doesn't work too well for PC games.
