I am considering getting the M17x R3 with 3D. But I have never seen a game in 3D.

Can someone with experience playing a game in 3D let me know whether they enjoyed it.

Please no complaints about M17x R3 here. This is meant for 3D gaming only.

Irrantional23, yes, its worth it if you really play the new games! I had the Envy 17 3D and returing it today just because I want the Sandy Bridge version with HDMI 1.4 and better cooling....

Anyway, it works great on certain games if you have enough GPU power. It does play nicely on Black Ops. WOW, really, when looking through scopes, its to literally die for, so beautiful. Very realistic. Just wish I could get it in Crossfire or SLI. I do want an Alienware down the line once I have money. The M18x sounds amazing, wondering if it will play 3D...

I don't really like it... it may be cool for some games but a big no for fps games like MW2, in my opinion.
When you consider buying the M17x r3 for 3d gaming keep in mind that you will have a hard time playing at 1080p resolution with max settings as you need twice the usual framerate for a smooth game.

That is what I was implying...the dual graphics cards will help alot if the M18x supports 3D which I don't see why not. That would be a dream machine, the only problem is Alienware does not have the design sexy enough... If maybe they combined forces with HP, then we'd have the ultimate professional looking and gaming machine rolled up all into one and you can count me in! HAhahaha :D

Does 3D require Nvidia graphs card? Im looking at the envy, and it looks like it offers ATI.

The Envy 17 3D has ATI, the new Sandy Bridge refresh of the Envy 17 3D will ahve ATI Radeon HD 6850 which is a rebranded HD 5850. It will have better cooling and support 1.4a HDMI so you can see 3D Bluray on a 3D tv!!!

So both ATI and NVIDIA support 3D these. Just choose the system you like best. I like Envy for the sexy slim look. Its too bad I can't get croosfire HD 6970s in that puppy, then I'd have a dream laptop.

Bottom line is, I was skeptical about 3D. Let me tell you its amazing.
With the Envy 17 3D you get a free Tridef Ignition program/software to play your regular 2d avi, mkv, whatever you have in 3D! I even saw some of my Dragonball Z episodes in 3D, I am in love with 3D now. 3D in theaters on the other hand I don't like.

Most likely, I plan on owning both an Envy and an Alienware...one for professional looks and occasional gaming, and one for the kid in me - Alienware of course, lol.

So the ATI card can play games in 3D? The Nvidia 3d transforms 2d games into 3d. Does ATI do this?

I have not tried it, but YES!!!. With the Tridef Igition drivers you get free.. hold on, let me link you....

YES!!! Here is Tridef link to supported games. They are constantly adding more...obvious one is Crysis now you can play in 3D but be warned your FPS will suffer. LOL

    I don't own a 3D notebook, but I do own a 3D tv.

I think it's amazing. Movies in 3D is awesome, playing games in 3D also is (black ops on PS3 for example).
I love 3D, though i have to say, multiplayer Black Ops is harder in 3D then normal. I find it quite alot harder to aim down a scope in hectic multiplayer games online, then in 2D. It takes you a fraction longer in 3D to aim, since what you see in your scope is also in 3D and thus making it harder to really aim.

But it's just awesome, if you can afford it, don't doubt, you won't regret it.

As I too mentioned Black Ops, the reason it plays so amazingly in 3D is because it was specifically programmed to handle well in 3D. So it will play older games from 2d to 3D, but maybe not as well as if the company making the game programs special 3D code...

BTW, AW probably got paid to only let the 3D screen go with the Nvdia card cause 3D is nvidia only while we all know ATI can do 3D...

Actually Black Ops is a very poor example of 3D, the 3D in black ops is really not very good.
It's one of the worst 3D games i have (though, no misunderstanding here, it still plays really well in 3D).

If already you like black ops in 3D, then you will really like the movies and games where 3D is well implemented.

    1. Double check if your eyes can stand/see 3D... lots of people have very bad experience with 3D.
    2. Nvidia 3D work only on 120Hz monitors with active 3D Vision glasses.
    3. ATi support 3rd party 3D so... you free to take iZ3D or Tridef drivers and experiment.

Nvidia 3D vision imho more user friendly and complete technology, but ATi have some advances too. Anyway once you tried 3D... you hooked forever.

    Here I go again...

3D is bad. Proved in labs, and human tests, 3D technology kills brain cells. What do I mean by that? By having less brain cells ( aka getting killed ), you get dumber and dumber by the time. Also, your eyes will be total crap when you get older. ( I mean the 60s ).

    My 2 cents.

As long as glasses will be required, 3D anything won't be worth it.

Sony is planning on breathing some HD life into Head Mounted displays, this is a set of glasses with some oled panels inside imitating most times 80-100 in screen about 6-8 feet away, Just you and the tv. If sony does a good job with their new HMD I could see 3d really shining on one of those. The effect would be amplified because their wouldn't be any distractions in the corners of your eyes. It would feel more natural for your vision rather than a tv being broken up into slices.

Once a 3d / HMD combo arrives that can do 1080p, imitate atleast a 100 inch screen from 6 feet, then I think it may be worth a second look at that time.

This, coupled with pretty much being restricted to 720p, means 3D mainstream is still a ways off.

2 Things to think about with 3D Gaming Laptops. 3D anything is usually recommended with a massive 3D HDTV, and I mean 50" TVs. At minimum. It doesn't matter if you feel sick or not, EVERYONE is affected by 3D. Your eyes become strained and your brain also. The smaller the screen, the greater the degree. 3D and laptop gaming to me with current technology on a 2D flat panel is pure gimmick to destroy your eyes.

2nd thing, no one plays better with 3D. Maybe more "immersive." But gaming performance, doesn't provide any edge. Majority of players play significantly worse with 3D than with 2D.

I hate all the eye-tricking 3d techniques I have come across thus far.

Hate. The effect is literally bothersome. I couldn't stand it for more than about a minute under any circumstance.

Not interested in 3d video games, or 3d film, or 3d anything, for the foreseeable future. super gimmicky.

And versus that numerous reports where is claimed 3D does not have any short and long term effects.

I have found mostly people saying 3d sucks, is bad, or any other unfounded negativity (where getting sick of 3D is a good reason not to take 3D for example) are either made by people who have never really seen it, or who can't afford it.

Honestly, I hate 3D for what its going to do to the current market of LCD/LED based things; laptops, tvs, even phones will all soon be striving to contain some sort of "3D" tech, to keep up with other companies, thus continuing the never-ending cyle of "Ohhh this one company did it and its kinda cool, lets all do it!", which leads to the need for increase in power for everything, which leads to my compy being obsolete in 6 months. Can we please just stay in the HD realm until its actually mainstream?

I think whether or not its worth it depends on the individual consumer. Some people don't think the increased depth is worth the loss in resolution, FPS, and having to wear glasses as well as pay considerably more. However other people do think that extra depth is worth the compromises. Personally I will be staying away from 3D Gaming until those issues are resolved.

Also I blame all this on Avatar, who thought such a mediocre movie would spawn such a focused push towards this tech.

you are looking at it from a gamers perspective, of course this is a gaming forum but the bigger market is movies, which it is being pushed harder for rather than gamers. I know PS3 and PC are doing it, but thats it. I think if any market really does make this big it would be the gaming market, but theres too much wrong to justify the means.

on the mail article, it could have been a number of factors, they say later on in life focusing can be altered, this can happen from gameboys, books, cell phones and ipods, all making you focus in on an object, then refocusing . He is a student, reads a lot of books and papers, could have been a combination of that and the 3d made him sick, regardless hardly conclusive. Neither article states anything about brain cells being killed off at all and the other article reinforces the focusing after effect, which can be caused by plenty of other things not just 3d.

Again please provide some evidence stating human testing, a medical journal and not some local news report.

A little off topic, but that movie was just terrible. How did it become the best selling movie of all time.... It blatantly replayed the consequences of the British invading North America and it did so with religious cameos popping up every so often.

It is true that that they recommend a TV size of 50" or more. Monitors are different because they are closer to you than your typical TV. No one would recommend a 50" size for being required to achieve an excellent 3d experience in a PC monitor. Especially not a laptop display.

It's just Cameron being lame. He knows how to make movies sell with his experience with Titanic and success of Dances with Wolves. Avatar is Dances with Wolves story and then he used the same marketing, other lame methods to boost sales he used with Titanic.
