Yen-Shyang Hwang, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 8 June 2009]

Acer plans to launch a 15.6-inch 3D notebook, which the company jointly developed with Wistron, at the end of October 2009, according to Campbell Kan, vice president of Acer's mobile computing business unit.

The notebook features built-in software which can convert regular 2D movies to 3D, and will also directly support 3D movies.

Currently, users still need to wear stereoscopic glasses for the 3D to be effective, however, Acer is developing a model without the need for glasses, although it still has quiet a few technological obstacles to overcome, Kan noted.

The notebook will come equipped with Windows 7 and therefore Acer will not make an official announcement until Microsoft launches the OS, Kan added.

In addition to Windows and Android models, Acer is also working on its third-generation netbook, which will feature a similar concept as MIDs or smartbooks with strong network connectivity and convenience, and it targeting a launch in the second of third quarter of 2010, Kan noted.

    Yeah, I noticed that too!

But until Windows 7 comes out, ACER won't be doing anything else publicly, so by the time Windows 7 comes out we'll pray for insane advancements, even a prototype by then would be amazing

I would love to game on 3d. So by the time of Win 7 release, hope other manufaturers also come up with that idea coz I am fan of Dell and Alienware.

Ummm... Yes it could convert it somewhat... sorry to be a party pooper, but the problem is to really be 3D, the creator of the content has to layer it, set which things are at the foreground, middleground and background... The Software could do that to a degree but it might end up looking like a bunch of cutouts in a movie... This is a cool concept but we'll see how good the actual product is ;)

I am sure Alienware would probably be one of the first to adopt 3D if it sees people interested in it...

I foresee a $250 3D screen upgrade from them though... lol
Since we're talking 120Hz or more here vs 60Hz standard...

Unless they have some sort of left right 30FPS flashing..
WAIIIT!... This isn't the right 3D I'm thinking about am I?

Well theres Blue/Red, Left & Right eye flashing, Multiple screens overlayed, and something else im missing

Have you seen UP? there taking a whole new direction in 3D it is stereoscopic, and Nvidia is already doing Specialized Glasses and Monitors that do the same thing as this laptop...

They cost a bomb, if you can tell me an ACER that costs REDICULOUS pricing, i will be happy with NVIDIA' glasses.

Don't 3D games already do that by their very nature? I don't know how it works exactly but I assumed that in an FPS for example, the programmer would merely have to have the displayed image flicker between two slightly different camera points (i.e. for your two eyes) to simulate binocular vision.

Actually, would you even need 3D glasses if you can make the screen flicker between two eye viewpoints simulating binocular vision?

The design of that 3D laptop is similar to the Acer Gemstone series O_O

You have to block out each eye back and forth, hence the glasses...

Or else it looks like IMAX but with insane headaches!

The problem I see is that you need the game to run at 60 FPS MINIMUM, because each eye will only see 30FPS due to the left/right switching

So if you have the game at a "FLUID" 30FPS, you will have laggy headaches because of that...

So not only do you need a 120Hz display to ensure smooth 3D, but you need a powerful GPU, that's why nVidia recommends the GTX 295...

3D with the glasses never worked for me. My eyes somehow distort and separate both the red & blue side rather than marge them to get the 3D effect o_O

Usually I have to block one eye(normally I block the red one since I see better with the blue shade) and then I lose the 3D effect lol :p

Anyhow, this certainly looks like an interesting technology. Not sure how many applications will want to support it however.

This is different technology - if you've ever been to Disney World or Universal Studios, it's the method they use. Two differently polarized lenses, two images to match up with each lens's polarization, and voila, 3D! No colour distortion at all.

I hope that they don't go overboard with the 3D effects - I don't want things flying at me from my laptop's screen! Adding depth to scenes, like they did in Up, would be my preference.

Yes thanks Tesuigi, having grown up with crappy 3D I was wondering why such a big resurgence, I watched UP recently and now I understand why we are going back to 3D, they use a much different system (stereoscopic I think?) It has little color distortion and a layered effect that doesn't even necessarily need to come out of the screen to give an awesome experience!

    Whatever happened to Asus's G50v with it's 15.6" 3d screen?
