Hi all, Ive had my Alienware M15X for about 2 months now (Alienware M15X: i7 740QM, 6GB 1333 RAM, GTX 460M 1.5GB, OCZ Vertex 2E 240GB, Blu Ray Slot drive, 1920 x 1080 Display) I originally had the ATI 5850M installed as it was the best card at that time, Now I understand that the difference between the 1GB on the 5850M and the 1.5GB on the GTX 460M isnt where the real perfomance lies but rather the actual power of the card. Without doing research and assuming you "get what you pay for" I upgraded my laptop to the GTX 460M. I did look a few of the Comparison websites and the GTX 460M came out on top in pretty much all the 3d mark benches.

Anyway i decided to bench my GTX 460M and got the score:

    3D Mark Score 7129
    CPU Score 25642
    GPU Score 5764

Having read the camparison websites I thought I should be scoring 7500~. The 5850M was scoring around about the 5500 score but from reading what alot of you guys have scored im not really sure whats wrong?

I have the latest Dell drivers for the nvidia which are 259.64. I have tried later ones and have been to the laptopvideo2go website trying to find new ones with no luck of actually been able to get them installed.

Any feedback on your guys 3D Mark Vantage scores and drivers would be great.

    Thanks
    Shaun

An Alienware M15x HD5850 will still destroy that overclock. Ken Lee overclocked a 460M more than he did and scored 8,500 GPU. Put it this way: Alienware M15x HD5850M overclocked GPU score alone will beat Ken Lee's total Vantage Score.

Vantage is idotic with PhysX. PhysX running on GPU is not CPU. But whatever, Nvidia pays well.

Here is mine a HD5870M. But I've seen from Alienware M15x, higher overclocks. HD5850M and HD5870M are the same except for clock speeds. But SOME, I emphasize some, Alienware M15x Hd5850M can overclock to 900.

Looks convincing! I still have my 5850M, but I dont have any thermal paste! When I get some il try my 5850M and benchmark that on 3D Mark Vantage to see the results! I should have done this before I had it changed tbh but DUH me :-( Is there an explanation as to why i may only be scoring 5700~ on the GTX 460M? Its completely stock settings

Not sure. Try running GPUz and post a screenshot of it. Maybe not all your PCI-E lanes are being used, that happens occasionally. It should be x16. Maybe yours is running at x8. Also check your power settings to make sure it's on high performance mode.

The stock score for 460M should be.

    Overall: 8200
    GPU: 6700

Ok i can go into the Adjust GPU settings, but if i click any other i get BSOD! heres the results i got. Even tho in the ntune thing it says the clock is at 1500mhz GPU-Z still reads it at 750?

If you'd like, you can try using MSI After Burner. That seems to be the choice for overclocking for nvidia users

hey all, as you can see in the pic its quiet abit overclocked now, i scored 7492 in 3d mark vantage GPU score. when the test finished both GPUZ and MSI Afterburner were reading the temp at 68c is that reasonable or is that too hot?

thats cool...mine runs at 90-95C for games...you still got some room For you try to keep the temp below 90C. 80s is just fine

Interesting to compare to a desktop card attached to a notebook on a x1.Opt link:

    i7-740QM+GTX460M=7888
[email protected] (DIY ViDock)=12859 (or 14427 at 820/1900 overclock)

    I'm wondering if a GTX460M is equivalent to a desktop GTS450? I believe a GTS450 gets a 3dmarkvantage.gpu in the 8k range.

As long as you keep your temps monitored in a safe range you will be fine. I have my HD5870m quite overclocked and I have zero issues.

The Alienware HD5850 gets crazy OC numbers though... My max is 900/1030 and it isn't completely stable heh.

But anwyays, changing from 5850 to GTX460 is not really an upgrade. HD5850-GTX460-HD5870 etc are too close within each other to really be an upgrade. Specially since the HD5850 is sometimes a better overclocker than HD5870 lol.

Yep, the GTS450 and the GTX460m have the same specs, except the GTX460m has a wider bus, though with lower clocks.

Just as the HD5870m is an HD5750 or so.

I found that 5850m's dnt usually go above 870 core. Its probably because the 5870m's are higher binned chips

Here is my vantage score. I think you can overclock your 460m much higher than you are doing currently. Take a look at my clocks on GPU-z to get an idea. Although the 5850 is a SWEET card, the 460m is also great. Keep in mind that all the benchmarks are exactly that....not real world gaming.

Clocks were at 815/1630/1400 for reference. I've also successfully overclocked it higher while keeping it stable at 825/1650/1450...(This was the last time I ran vantage which was on the 29th of November).

Man between you, DaneGRClose, and a few others, you have really got those 5850's screaming! Seeing that you guys overvolt them to 1.15v to achieve those clocks, how hot do they get?

With the 460m, I'm sure we will be able to get pretty high too if we overvolt, but NiBiTor doesnt recognize the vbios of the card :( Currently I'm unaware of anyway to overvolt them to get higher clocks. I'm maxed out right now.

That was a special run just for inap ;)

Never trust Alienware on hardware, they did the same thing with the 260m, they're good cards but price doesn't mean you get better performance on everything lol.

On temps I couldn't run those clocks off of a/c, but realistic temps on gaming clocks were max of 70s-80s. That run never went over 50 but it was on some HEAVY a$$ A/C lol.
