This isnt about gaming, but i thought it might fit here aswell.

I am planning to buy a Laptop with integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics.
I am also planning to work with lightwave on my laptop (which is a 3D application).

Anyone know how well the GMA 950 performs with this kind of applications. The laptop wont be my primary workstation. But it would be fun to be able to continue working with 3D when i am not at home aswell.

    Thanks.

I don't know how heavy that program is, but I think you'll have some difficulties. (I could be wromg too)

I have a Ati IGP320M and it works great for 3DsMax 7, Solidworks, Ansys, Inventor, and Pro/E Wildfire 2. They all work fine, except the rendering takes a good bit of time and it doesn't look as good as on my workstation.

Yes. Just cut down the detail/depth of your 3D model display when working on the laptop, and it should be ok. Rendering will also take a lot longer, especially with the OpenGL "fast" renderers and such.

If I were you, I'd listen to people on cgsociety more than here. They're the 3d artsy people, so if they say it's bad (and it's the general sentiment on the site, rather than just two isolated people), then it's probably true. :)

hamshu's post above is about an ATI IGP (which is a lot beefier than Intel's 950), so keep in mind the results might vary.
(And Pitabred's post doesn't say whether he's worked with the 950 specifically)

    Myself, I don't do 3d modelling, and don't have a 950, so I can't advice you. but I'd ask around on cgsociety if I were you. :)

My IGP is 3 years old. My dad has a GMA 950 and it runs a little better than my.

I would say since your getting a machine designed for games and you can customize it with a dedicated graphics card, go ahead and get it. It won't cost much more than the GMA 950 and it will improve performance with everything, especially the program you are talking about.

No, I haven't used the 950 specifically. I have however, used some 3D apps on older Intel integrated chipsets. It's an exercise in pain and frustration, but if you really tweak it it can work.

I would say that the Nvidia Go 7200 is a huge cost increase... 490$ on the Swedish Dell shop

The gma950 is a power chip but for office use. If you are a bussines person it's recomendable this because the battery saving, but for gamming NO. I have some friends that have this graphic card and I'm wondering if I could install some last games in their computers.
