    Hi.

most people use 3dmark06demo as it` is free

the big plus is you cannot change the settings, meaning everybody`s test runs with the same resolution.

It makes it easier to compare systems.

3DMark Vantage looks fantastic, but how many people are going to have it?

    Regards

    John.

I think 3dmark06 is still plenty stressful even for new top end systems, a benchmark is not obsolete until it becomes invalidated in some manner.

Take good ol' aquamark3 for instance, its so "easy" that any current systems 3dcard can process it so fast that the cpu becomes a bottleneck and thus for the last 2 years or so aquamark3 was treated more like a cpu test rather than a video card test.

The bottleneck was very clear as OCing your gpu did nothing to your score while the cpu did.

    Hi.

aquamark3 is no good for multi-core processors

    I got a much better score on my laptop Core2Duo 2.4ghz 8600mGT

    Than I get on my Desktop Core2Quad 2.4ghz 8600GT

    Regards

    John.

people probably said the same thing about 3dmark03 and 3dmark05, but in time it will become the defacto standard like 06 is today.

They lost me at "Operating System: Windows Vista" . . .

At any rate, I agree that 3DMark06 is still a good stress test. The CPU test is especially good, it can use up to 64 cores. It is an extremely demanding test.

The rumors is that the summer-planned 9900 GTX is scoring "only" 10k in it

Since it's a DX10 bench, I guess we should see all the new features of DX10 right? Can't wait.

There will be a free basic edition like 06 right?

I'm not object to 3DMark because at least it is a common benchmark, and good to tax your GPU for overclock stability and such. But I'm far from excited about a benchmark being released. 3DMark06 is already taxing enough, and finally a somewhat reliable test for average hardware today. I remember scoring only a couple thousand 3DMark06 points on the hardware I had at the time.

Is the standard Vantage benchmark going to be widescreen only? That would make sense too if they're going to make it Vista and DX10 only!

    http://www.yougamers.com/news/18513_3dmark_vantage_has_gone_gold/

You get ONE free run, the equiv of the free 06 edition is $6.95

I wouldnt be surprised if the $6.95 version becomes the defacto vid card "pack in" in the near future. As widely as their products are used I dont see a problem with the small entry fee for basic.

Anyways, I'm currently out of the dust since I only have XP installed. I'll probably start a new partition and fire up Vantage. :)

    Hi

I run it at default settings, most tests run under 5 fps on my 8600GT.

like a slide show, not overly impressed, I think i will stick with 06

Read the FAQ. It's said that it's a common bug with Vantage version 1. Clearing the field and entering it in again seems to have solved the problem for me.... :)

I got P4212 with the 169 whql driver set, 74's would crash after the first test, not sure how long they will allow it, but for the trial as long as you dont click the box on the results page you can keep running it, it allows you to scroll so you can see the results fully.

Performance was about as expected, not wowed with it overall, not enough to buy it at any rate with my current setup, might get it when I get a new card if it isnt bundled.

There are no official supported driver sets yet, Both camps are working on drivers and they should pop up fairly soon. Right now the numbers are pretty much meaningless.
