I make video clips of varying length pretty often
and I remember the first time I switched to 6600 GT SLi
and was amazed at how much the rendering time reduced.

Now that I'm looking for a laptop and look more into mobile graphic cards,
I've found out that the new 8600M GT has higher 3Dmark score than 6600 GT SLi.
Does this mean the rendering time will get even shorter?
If so, how much of improvement will it make?

First it's much more important which cpu are you using, then the ram and if the program supports gpu accelleration the graphics card.
So I think a notebook with an Intel core 2 duo will help you very much. you can look at models 5500, 5600 or the best for a performance/ good price ratio T7200 at 2.0ghz or look at newer santa rosa models. For video editing is best 2gb of ram ddr2 667mhz.
The video card for notebooks you saw is very good and it has just been released, so expect that with new drivers it will be even more better. Now it is slightly better than an Go7700 and Ati x1700. Look for the notebook with the right price for you with the 8600M GT.
    Bye!
