Data Updated: 2006.6.30, Prices Updated: 2006.6.26 (No taxes and shipping costs included in prices.)
Take into consideration that prices are valid for specified configurations, and that they can vary a lot with different configurations...
The configurations as presented are what I'd call "suitable" to specific notebook; e.g. 2x100GB disks in RAID1 for Rock notebooks.
I hope this chart helps you when making a decision about which Notebook or TabletPC to buy,
especially if you consider playing latest games on it, or using 3D intense programs, even MS Vista.
Information for this chart was gathered from two of the greatest notebook related sources:
1) NotebookReview.com website, Forum Graphics Card Guide --- my thread 3DMark05 for various notebooks
2) RockDirect.co.uk website, Forum Benchmarking Index --- my thread 3DMark05 for various notebooks
I recommend checking both of these sources, to see more ifnormation and various useful opinions of posters...
Note that one of the important information missing in specifications provided is warranty! I recommend checking that too.
Important instructions for further researching:
-- Clicking on 3DMark05 scores in 1st column will take you to notebook reviews (if available).
-- Clicking on prices in 2nd column will take you to online shops (if available).
-- Clicking on notebok names in 4th column will take you to official sites of notebook producers (if available).
Sorted by 3DMark05 Scores (1st column - higher is better) - all default settings, no overclocking
Note1: For easier distinction font for TabletPCs is in different color than font for Notebooks.
Note2: For playing modern 3D games at medium settings/resolution look for notebooks which scored above 2000.
Notebooks which scored above 4000 are capable of playing most modern 3D games at high settings/resolution.
(Take this information just as a 'guidline', since 3DMark05 is only a synthetic benchmark - good one, but still...)

Let me put here my personal opinion for best notebooks in specific categories based on the above tables:
-- Best value for gaming & work (3D apps etc.): Rock Xtreme CTX -- due core CPU, 2GB RAM, great portability for such power, good price
-- Best for gaming & work (3D, video editing, ...): Rock Xtreme 64 -- 64bit CPU for WinVista, 2x 100 GB HDDs (RAID!), 2GB RAM, but heavy
-- Best value for gaming: FSC Amilo Xi 1546 -- faster CPU than the Toshiba below (better for work), 2GB RAM, great price
-- Second best value for gaming: Toshiba P105-S921 -- huge 160GB disk for many space-needy games, great price
-- Fastest for gaming: Rock Xtreme SL -- much better 3DMark05 score than Dell XPS M1710! 2GB RAM, 19" LCD, but heavy
-- Most portable for gaming: Asus W3J -- very good gaming capabilities, it's thin and light (2.2kg)
-- Cheapest duo core for work but weaker gaming: Toshiba A6 -- for gaming is weaker than Dell 9300, but for multi-tasking way better
-- Cheapest of all here and still good for gaming: Dell 9300 -- for now you can still get one even under $700 (with coupon), single CPU though
-- Fastest TabletPC, good for gaming: Gateway M285-E -- it's fast, it's light, up to 8.5h battery! (adding 1GB of RAM not cheap tho, +$450)
-- TabletPC for 3D work & decent for gaming: Toshiba M7-117 -- it's fast, it's light, excellent battery life, for size it's perfect for 3D apps

Numbers are way off on the Clevo...my brand new M570A @ 2Ghz cost a little over $2000 without memory...and my stock card clocked 6940's with 84.25 drivers....I understand its almost impossible to make a completely accurate list, but I thought I'd let you know since I just got mine 2 weeks ago and I love it...
edit: I noticed you used mostly 100GB drives for price comparison, mine is an 80GB 7200 so I guess it did cost a bit less then the clevo you have listed, but not by that much.
Good work and nice list...will save people some time I'm sure...

You may want to recheck those figs.....I have an E1705 with only the 1.83 core duo....and my bone stock 3DMark figure was well above 3837....it was more like 4700ish.

my sig
1388 at standard clock (300/216) with omega drivers
1455 at 339/229 with omega drivers
I'll get back to you with more. apparently dell underclocks alot of their graphics cards, standard on the desktop x300s is 350/400. -

That's an excellent chart, and a great idea. Mind if I put a link to it in the Graphics Card Guide?
You can add my Sager NP-5320 to the list if you want - 3DMark05 stock: ~2800. OC'ed (400:392 & modified timings) = 3,300.
Thanks again,

The Acer Aspire 5672WLMi can be found for alot cheaper than $1555 (and for long while ago too)
the cheapest one on pricegrabber is $1075... and others a lil over that price...
http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Acer_Aspire_AS5672WLMi_XPH_Notebook,__16310448/search=5672WLMi
edit: in fact most of those listed prices are kinda inflated :/ -
Thanks for all the replies, will update prices and add presented data...
(Sure, anyone can use this chart on their will, and feel free to change/fix anything...)
Will also add links to reviews from where I've got 3DMark05 scores...
Any further info appreciated. Have fun. -
Hi Chaz,
I am glad you like it!
Boyan -
This might be too much of a headache to do, but you might want to check to see whether those prices include a 3-year warranty, as most of those prices are without one. The Quanta's price is with a 3-year warranty, so it's $135 less in a more comparable configuration.
Nice work, though. -

Mate you are wonderfull! You rule!
I never saw such a great post! I want this to be a sticky!
Anyway, Fujitsu Siemens is doing some good job in Europe. The Amilo Xi series looks incredible! I hope that will be my next notebook!

The 9300 does more than that on stock drivers. It's closer to 3300-3400 actually, not the 2900~ you report.

The E1705 score is wrong and misleading. Dell underclocked the card due to insufficient cooling. At nvidia standard clock speed 350/850, there is a HUGE performance increase by bringing the clocks up to intended level. I know your chart is the standard non overclocked speeds, but bringing the card up to the lvl nvidia posted is not overclocking, its reducing the underclock. You get 3800 with the 250/658 clock. You get a whopping 5600 with the standard speeds. This brings the card in the intended category. The ATI x1600 scores 4100 pts which makes it look faster than the dell from you chart. The 7800 is much faster than the x1600.
-
Well, if there is not enough cooling, then overclocking and/or clocking it higher than notebook producer set it is not really sensible thing to do, in my opinion anyway...
I don't know about 7800 being faster than x1600, but as far as I've read ATI cards are better at cooling, so no wonder ATI cards are clocked higher - relatively speaking compared to nVidia...
This chart is far from being perfect in all occasions, it's just another "source" for easier decision making when buying a new notebook. -
-
I think it's better to leave this table as in underclocked marks since is the way the manufacturer intended for the laptop to be. Almost anybody who has a laptop knows the potential it has and though I know this is meant to be informative for the new consumer, it doesn't take much to learn that almost all laptops are underclocked. That, or you can always put a disclaimer saying that these scores are for stock clocks.
My post about the 9300 is because that's my 3dmark05 score out of the box. I could might as well say that reaches 4300+ overclocked but it would me misleading to the new consumer. That's what I think. -
MrYMan, great collection of data and thanks for the update. One clarification for the Gateway NX860XL, though. The 5324 score that I submitted was what I measured on my 2.0 GHz Core Duo machine with a price closer to $2700.

MrYman, thanks again for posting this, it obviously is helping a lot of people.
Your efforts are apprecitated!
You can add the Dell XPS M1710 if you want - I got 8,518 in 3DMark05.(Core Duo T2600, Nvidia GeForce Go7900GTX 512MB)

Hi Chaz!
Please make it sticky if you find worth it... What about also making a copy of it in "What Notebook Should I Buy?" forum?

I've also picked it as best in category for best portable gaming machine. (At the very bottom of thr first post.) -

NT$43,900 = HK$10,500 = US$1,354
I bought mine in Hong Kong, which is more expensive. SRP:
NT$54,350 = HK$13,000 = US$1,675
Not important but fyi.
PS. As if that was bad, the DVB-T in the Hong Kong version is disabled while the Taiwanese version is active. In other words, the Taiwaese version is far better and cheaper. -

Did your clevo (same as sager 5720) come with the 84.25 driver or did you update them? I thought people were having problems with that driver. I thought of using it, but shied away since people were talking about odd things happening after they installed them.
Can you give me some feedback on that driver? -
Several people pm'd me asking where to buy but sadly I am not aware of any Asian vendors that provide International mail order service; only local. In fact, I originally wanted to order from Taiwan but searching high and low for a month and still couldn't find a vendor that ships to Hong Kong. Because of this I had to buy local and subject to paying HK$3000 (US$387) more. I could've fly there, buy it, fly back and still have money left over for desert if I have only known the HK version is missing the DVB-T. Anyways, your best bet is order from Europe. Check out the Where To Buy and the links within each country.
Anyways, if you are to use the Taiwanese price to calculate the Price/Score Ratio, the new score will balloon to 2.77.
3750 / 1354 = 2.77

One question:
Is the X1800 powerfull enough to break the 7500 barrier in 3dmark 05? I am really playing to get Amilo Xi series!
Thanks,
Charlie-Peru -
As for price, well, I'll keep it as is, since if one is buying to USA or Europe shipping cost would be quite high... But since you put info here, ppl can see it anywayAnd even if there will be a distributor in USA I suspect price will be higher than in Taiwan, as usually... and I'd bet even higher than what you paid in Hong Kong

To run latest 3D games, which 3DMark05 score is promising they will run smoothly?
Say, if 3Dmark05 score is over 4000, how will games run? If 4000 is not it, then which is? -

For gaming at medium settings/resolution, I'd say around 2,000, and if you plan to play at high settings and a step up from the standard SVGA/XGA resolutions most people play at, you're talking 3000+.
There are variables involved, as 3DMark is only a synthetic benchmark, so you can use the scores I posted as 'guidelines'. -

Sorry for the doublepost but I think you guys missed this:
I asked: Will a X1800 break the 7500 barrier? How good is this card, can I play Oblivion with HDR at 1440*900 everything highest?
I am really considering this Amilo Xi series. I like Fujistu Siemens, cheap and strong.

i got 2150 with a 128mb 6600, is that on par?
-
Is it plain X1800 or X1800 XL? I don't know if there is a mobile X1800 XL, but if there is, that one might be the one that breaks the 7500 mark (if that is important for you). -

As for the ATI X1800 - there's two versions, the X1800 (compares with Go7800) and the X1800XT (compares with Go7800GTX). Since very few notebooks actually have those cards (I only know of the Clevo M570U that has the X1800XT), it's hard to say what is better, but it won't break the 7,500 point mark in 3DMark05. Not even the Go7800GTX will do that unless you work it a little. -

All right thanks Chaz and zicky...
The X1800 I mean is a plain X1800 that is in the Amilo Xi... But a 3d mark score of 7000 according to the topic starter is also a great score! But zicky you said that the 7800 Go has a score of 6000+... then a plain X1800 is 1000 points higher! That is impressive!

I notice that the Rock XCTX benchmark (with a rather excellent score for the price) was performed using the Nvidia 7800 GTX as opposed to the ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 XT that comes standard with the notebook (one card order either at no extra cost). I don't suppose anyone has done a benchmark of that system with both cards for comparison? ChazMan has the nVidia listed just above the ATI on his graphic card comparison , but I have read mixed reviews of which is the better card; for instance, some references of the ATI being able to run cooler (thus easier to overclock) and that the ATI can also do some simultaneous rendering that the nVidia can't do.
I should probably add that I will be using the system for 3d modeling (typically SolidWorks) and for gaming. And thanks to MrYman, this is a very useful thread as a starting point for looking at different systems. -
So, let's wait when we see some real tests....
But for me, I am inclined to go for Rock Xtreme CTX, would pick Rock Xtreme 64, but just too expensive for me, and except possibility of having RAID 1, not much advantage over XCTX.... but I'll prob. do some video editing, and hmmmmm, RAID 1 sounds yumy...... Shall see. -

Yes I agree with you MrYman...
You would expect my X700 128 MB to get 2500 3dmark 05 points, but it only gets 2280... that is because the RAM is DDR1, a cheap model of the card. I am going to wait until the real scores come of that beast, then I will consider a purchase.

Price for NX860XL at your spec is just over 2100 USD.

Wow, very useful thread. Thanks! I'm one of those ppl who were looking for the Joybook S73G after hearing about it from iTwins.. its light and powerful! If I could buy it right now I would. However.. since they don't have any N. America vendors.. all I can do is wait wait wait. =d

xAMDvsIntelx writed that in other topic :

Well that just shows how bad the Dell drivers are lol

If anyone sees review for "FSC AMILO Xi 1546" please let us know...
I guess that the 3DMark05 score won't be that high as predicted in the chart... -
Notebook Solutions Company Representative NBR Reviewer
Yes I am also very very curious about the 3dmark of Xi 1546... It would be so great if someone would review it now...
By the way: I think it has the same case as that of M3438G/M4438G... there is a review of that model! You can check weight and size...
