Hi all, Im new :) Hope Im in the right section here..
    Anyway I just recently purchased a dell e1505 (core duo t2050 i think) with the 256 MB ATi radeon x1400 (hypermemory :( ) So I just ran 3dmark06 and i scored a 781! :p

Ok I know this is not a gaming maching or the best out there but ive seen many marks higher than this for the same card. I have the latest omega drivers with powerstip installed. I even OC to 559/450 and the tests ran at the same frame rate (1fps-3fps).

Do i have something configured wrong? It said that the drivers I was using werent exactly compatible with 3dmark but ive seen people on here running the same setup but getting MUCH higher marks. Any input in appricated. Thanks!

EDIT: Question about the core duo thing. Do i have two 1.6ghz processors (3.2Ghz) or two processors that equal 1.6GHz?

You have two 1.6ghz processors that operate independently, so it is not a 3.2ghz processor in that sense.

3dmark06 is the latest 3d benchmark tool from futuremark, unless you have a beast of a system you will get fps of 1-3 in those tests. It is nothing to worry about, 3dmark is not indicative of gaming trends at the moment, rather where we will be in a few years time and what will be the expected graphical quality then. 781 is a normal score for a X1400 at stock, if you overclocked I imagine you might have got around 100 more points. Do not worry about it. As long as you can play the games you want at the resolutions you want, benchmarks should not matter to you.

If you havent yet, check out my thread in this forum (over 25,000 genuine hits already):

Windows XP Multi Core config and Benchmarks

This should help your to optimize your dual core system. This guide also recommends a number of benchmarks to compared before and after scores... PCMark05, SuperPI and 3DMark06 should be the ones to really see the score differences.

3Dmark06 is probably the only one of the current benchmarks that have multithread support. So the "CPU Score" will definitely have an increase after the hotfix gets done. The 3Dmark score will also increase, but nominally.

sionyboy is right, that is a normal score for your card.
Those people probably have ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 or Nvidia GeForce Go7600 graphics cards, which are far more powerful than your X1400; see these charts for performance standings and information on video cards in general.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=39568
As for your CPU, it is dual-core; two CPU cores on one chip. Unless an application is multi-threaded (meaning it can use two processors to do its work), then it will not use both cores and it will perform like it would on a 1.6GHz processor. If you are running a multi-threaded application (such as video encoding), that means it can use both cores at the same time to process data. In that sense you would have twice the processing power (two 1.6GHz processors doing the same job), and not twice the clockspeed. Important difference there. Clockspeeds are largely irrelevant these days; as long as it is a good CPU (Core Duo, Turion X2), then it will have good performance.

I got around 900 on my 6400, that was at stock speeds. OCing it I just broke 1100.

I am using the latest Omega drivers and Powerstrip. Thanks to Sylvain I learned (after doing research on this forum) that this was the right combo to OC the x1400. Believe it or not I had no idea how to even OC or what OCing was before coming to this forum, but thanks to a lot of members on here (especially Slyvain) I was able to educate myself on this subject and know all the ill effects..etc

Also some say they can only use Powerstrip 3.63 buld 540, this is most likely true but for some reason I was able to get away with the newer beta one. Thanks again to all.

BTW Slyvain: I was running the same versoin of Ubuntu Dapper drake on my old computer. WHat size partition are you using for it? I thinking about putting it on my Dell but they really make no games for Linux :) Great system though..

You may find that the version of ATT that comes with the latest 6.9 Omega drivers will also overclock the X1400 well. So you don't need to use powerstrip anymore unless you want to.

    And, I only have a 60GB Harddrive at the moment, so I have a 16GB partition for Linux root, 16GB partition for Windows C:\, 22GB for a combined FAT32 F:\ and /home, and a 2GB swap partition.

This is true, however, when installing the Omega Drivers you must answer "No" to when it asks if the computer is a laptop or it will disable Over clocking in ATT. Also you may not use PS when you do this(not that you would have to since you can use ATT to OC but just FYI)

Yes, you must do that, and also kill the ATi Hotkey Poller. To stop the normal powerplay interfering.

Also, swapping my partitions tonight! 20GB Windows just for games, 40GB to Linux.

Had a funny situation at university today. Had to use Microsoft OneNote to do some XML work. My tutor asked me what was the limitations of this software. I replied: "It only supports one operating system." Apparently she'd never had any sort of problem with people complaining about software not being compatible.

A very good point indeed! I was always wondering why when Id start my computer up running off battery, my clocks would be super low (something like 260/280 ..)

Im not too familiar with MS Onenote. Is it a music program or is it like Word or Excel like what we have here in the states? Here in Tucson, AZ I work at the University (also going to school) in the Micro/Nano fab center and I convinced our supervisor to run Ubuntu Dapper Drake on ALL of the computers in the lab. Of course we have that mininum 10 GB partition for windows programs :D

Also, is it possible to upgrade the x1400 to a x1600? Or does that require taking out the motherboard?

With the Dell's, you can only upgrade your graphics card to a card that is already available in your model laptop. And sometimes not even then. For example, I might have an X1300. I could order a X1400 and upgrade to that, no worries. But if I started with a GMA950, I might not be able to upgrade, as they use a different motherboard configuration.

And, OneNote is some dodgy tool for integrating databases with other files. It has some really crappy security measure: You can't move your work between computers it seems! We kept getting error messages about insufficient security priviliges. Still, we got three excellents and a very poor for it, so Im happy.

When I ran the test I got in the 900s with stock drivers. The E1505 can only upgrade to the x1400 at the moment.

best to ebay, return (within 21 days) if you want to upgrade gpu

are you talking about the intel 950 graphics media accererator? No, lol, I dont have that. I had the 800 series in my old toshiba satellite...it was horrible.. :D
Thanks again guys for the info about the x1400

ok, i just ran 3dmark06 on stock first time (thus not all stuff loaded on ram) inspirion 6400, core 2 duo 2.0ghz, 2gb ram at 533mhz x1400

    got 1158 on stock speeds

oh yea, this is using dell driver, not omega, just reformatted

does anyone know if omega drivers cause the dell lcd to not turn off when the lid is down?

    Nice score

When I shut my lid the computer goes to sleep, but I have it setup that way. Eitherway, Omega drivers dont interfere with that.

    haha

after installing omega 6.9 and ocing to 570/450, i managed a pitiful 29 points gain to 1187

    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=558918

this goes to show that OCing rarely ever gives you a performance boast of 10% let alone 20 or 30.

the cpu test was just a total slide show, 0-1fps, torture if you ask me

after installing omega 6.9, my laptop lcd won't turn off now when i close the lid... in power management, i set when i close my laptop lid to "do nothing" and other then that i don't know how to get the lcd to turn off

It doesn't turn off for me either, that's why I went back to ATi 6.9's, didn't install catalyst, and run ATT.
