Well that is your opinion and you are entitled to one. GTX 780M with 25% better graphic score than GTX 680M is more than enough for me to upgrade. In fact, for a simple architecture refresh and using the same chip, that is pretty amazing. Its not like I will pay full price for it either since I`m selling my notebook with GTX 680M so that will cover some of the cost.

As for 7970M OC vs 680M OC, its been covered here pretty extensively. The 680M with a simple overvolt makes it impossible to beat. We have two modders who have changed the vbios for us, and they have done an amazing job for the community.

Stable now for I geuss 1 month.

Temps are max 71+- and stable 50 - 53 and with coolerpad it goes on full idle to 40 degrees

People, some are enthusiastic about technological advances, some are skeptical. Cloud is a very enthusiastic fella, otherwise he is also realizing that 7600 vs 6300 is not that big of a deal (anyone who understands from computers to the extend of understanding from benchmarking knows this), I just don't get the point of getting into an argument of "to spank" or "not to spank"? is this really worth the trouble? He calls it spanking, I call it beating, you call it tying, somebody calls it could have been much better, what is the difference? We are talking about numbers after all. Let's put it this way, hopefully 780m will score 7.6k 3dmark11, and 7970m scores 6.3k. I guess 7.6k > 6.3k, I call it better than expected, you can say it is not worth the upgrade (everybody has a different opinion after all). Why to make it personal?

Very impressive! If only the m15x has the cooling your M17X R4 does! Funny how I was nearly bang on with the core clock. I can't imagine there are many 680M's with a score much higher than 8300! (needlessly stokes the fire haha)

He makes it sounds like a big difference but it is clearly not, it's rather a pathetic upgrade over the 680M, and that things happen, it's just a fact, if you call this difference huge or anything in that way your delusional.

It doesnt make it a bad videocard, but compared to before generation I say thumbs down.

If they OC to the same presence, sure it isn't worth an upgrade. But for someone who's buying a new machine in the near future, it's golden. Especially if said person does not wish to OC too much for whatever reason there may be (heat, power, flat out dislike of the idea)

I guess it is better than we all expected especially with this 20-25% jump, no? I mean let's remember the Fermi fiasco, 485m and 580m are pretty much the same card except for some circuitry optimization to clock it better within similar TDP. I think enabling 192 processors on the same GK104 core with better core clock within the same TDP speaks louds about the fine accomplishment that nvidia made so far (IF the rumors are true). I also don't think it is worth the upgrade as long as you are not a benching enthusiast (Meaker :D) or you just like to spend on hardware (me :)), but I don't know what I would have done if I had 680m, maybe I would have tried to see it through Maxwell? Who knows? It totally depends on how high Meaker / Prema / Slv7 (and many many others of our nice community) will take this new baby :D

I don't understand this statement. Do you mean the 7970M justifies its place as a competitor by having the performance it does at the price it does?

If you buy a 780M GTX only a fool would not OC it lol! Considering you have to put nearly $1K down to get your hands on one most want to squeeze every last drop out of it. Same with any other high end card. They are all expensive!

Comparing what to the before generation? O_O. 485M and 580M were almost the same. Or do you mean comparing 780M to the 680M?

He means compared to the current gen (7970M/680M). Yeah you are right the 580M was very similar to the 485M because Nvidia's 480M sucked so bad that nv had to re-release the high end for that gen. That is if I remember corrently. I was running along with a mere 4670M in those days lol

The 480M was just not suited for mobile. The 470M beat it, so they had to turn that into a high end chip for the 485M.
And if he's talking about vs current gen, It's a HUGE improvement compared to the current STOCK chips, especially without any kind of change in architecture. 280M to 285M, 485M to 580M etc all were almost the same. This is not. But as people say, the 680M is an OC monster and the 780M will be too. Even if nVidia used mostly tricks that are negated once one OCs to the highest levels (like undervolting etc) to get the 780M to that level of power, a base increase is still a base increase. As I posted earlier there are people who won't OC or don't wish to OC ^_^. But if it's all same architecture and the architecture isn't broken when a refresh comes out (I.E. 280M --> 285M, 680M --> 780M) then OC potential is the same. The only diff would have been the 485M --> 580M as that became more power optimized and (if I remember correctly) a little more optimized for Dx11 games.

Either way, it'll be a nice card and one I'll enjoy owning. If I ever get the money.

Anyone who knows how GPUs work, understands that +25% on the same architecture and on the same chip is amazing. I don`t think thats ever happend before, that Nvidia have voltage headroom to change GPUs like that

Its just silly to compare GTX 680M -> GTX 780M against GTX 580M -> GTX 680M since the 680M came with a brand new architecture. You can`t hope for the same gains in both scenarios.

Bah, I`m not wasting anymore of my time on this. I find it funny thats it always the 7970M owners who make the most noise. You can smell the jealousy

Yes, the 7970M is much cheaper then the 680M and seen the performance it's "almost" equal to a 680M, if not some better in some certain games.
The difference is not big between the cards and what videocard is better stock, I don't know, but seen the price...

Maybe there are some more bugged drivers for AMD, but I havent really had any issues.

Maybe it's amazing, but still doesn't justify this 3dmark11 score.....

And I feel offended by 7970M owners....
I bought this card because it was a good investment.
I know for sure if the 680M was alot faster I bought that card, but it's performance the same as the 7970M and that make me think with common sense...
Why would I chose for the same power for alot more money?
Maybe 3d? that's no option for me.
There was no reason to buy a 680M, no benefits.
I would sure bought a 780M if it was available in a alienware m17x r4 @ that time.

    Yeah,
GTX 485M and GTX 580M was same architecture, but its actually two different chips, GF104 and GF114, so Nvidia did some architecture improvements there. It was like 15% better performance, now we have 25% improvement, with using the same chip.

How is that not amazing? Think people, think.

My only concern is the price. If it's another 800$-900$, then no way. 20% performance add for 120% of the price, not worth it at all.

Ummm, no? He told a gpu spanks another gpu. If you are not the gpu in consideration (or actually involved in the production of these gpus), you shouldn't be offended, period. That doesn't mean I support anyone in this argument, I just don't get the point of the argument to begin with (I mean, the improvement is good for someone, bad for another, point of view..), why "spanking" is an awfully bad term compared to "beating" when it comes to a gpu (it is just adding a bit funny flavor on the concept of surpassing), I don't get it.. Guys, we are taking all this hardware business too seriously :D They are not our family you know :)

You can also take a look what GPUs the complainers have.

It was the exact same when 680M came out. I said it was gonna be around 15% faster in average. "LOL 15% faster, you are a moron". Yeah and then the Anandtech review came out and they all went away in shame.

Same thing happens again now I suppose. They just can`t deal with the fact that GTX 780M beats their 7970M by a big margin. So instead they blow up discussions like this and make them personal and dragging people everyone down with them. So sad.

Also, I've highlighted it in green now; you seem to be more receptive to that color.

Keep on twisting DaCm. Do you think his 7970M is different than any others? No? Then why to you assume it was directed at him personally? It wasn`t, it was directed at his GPU or 7970M in general. If you get offended by talks about a GPU beating another GPU, slapping it, beating it, eating it, whopping it, slaying it, whatever you want to call it, then stay away from these threads.

I`ve been around in forums for too long. These things don`t bite on me anymore. Can we carry on with the 780M discussions now?

Interesting, your chip likes the higher voltages, though the alienware cooling was always better.

Cloud, seriously, a couple of hundred points is hardly anything to write home about, the 780M is going to be a nice jump for those who run stock but for us tweakers it may hold less in store, depending on the ram.

vs 680M, yes maybe. That remains to be seen. I guess someone who runs 1100MHz or whatever like you do may bump in to some limitations regardless core count :p

vs 7970M, its going to be a huge jump.

We can't argue on the fact that the jump between the current gen and the new gen will be much lesser than the previous jump Fermi-Kepler - which was huge.

The point is: for people looking for a new machine, the new gen cards will be greater without a doubt than the previous gen, however if you currently own a 7970m or 680m, I'd say hold your breath further.

I'm not mentioning the case of the hardcore overclockers some of us are :p who will get this new card no matter what.

    In brief:
Fermi -> Kepler: 50-60% increase in performances
Kepler 1st gen -> New kepler: 15-20% we can't ask them the moon every year.

Unless the 780m proves to be 50% improvement I don't see the benefit or point. My stock voltage overclocked 680m suffices just fine now for everything. I have the option to overvolt and overclock more still to bring me up well above 780m stock levels. For 1080p gaming it will be more than sufficient for the next year. As much as I like new tech, it's still hard to justify.

Exaggerated claims are one thing, delivering on them is another. However, the advances that every company, including Intel!, seem to be making is nothing but good news for everyone.........

To be fair, there are very few examples where upgrading outside of architecture changes was ever worth it. Also Nvidia kinda put themselves in a weird place this generation, they had to release the 680m instead of the 675mx last year to beat AMD........which put an extremely powerful/stable overclocker on the market at the start instead of the end.

Hmmm, Maybe like HWingNut says, 25% to 30% improvement over stock does not really impress me. I usually wait till 100% or more improvement, otherwise it doesn't seem worth it (waited it out with my HD5870m until 7970m/680m).

All I hope is for products that have current 680m performance, but for much cheaper price. 780m can be king, I don't mind, but I hope they get more price consious.

50% is very noticable, especially at 1080p and highest details.

Heck I get 43% from my overclocking and it makes a huge difference.

Well really only people like me, with 2 year or more older laptops, should be excited about upgrading this summer. The only reason for a Clevo EM, M17x R4, or MSI GT70 owner to get stoked is if the actual models the new cards are shipping in have updates which entice a purchase.
Well that's not going to happen.

For one, it's not 50%, more like 20-30% at best (stock). I'm not one to OC like mad for gaming unless my GPU is near end of life and just need the performance until I buy a new card or laptop. And it's all perspective. $700 more noticeable for running 70FPS instead for 50FPS even? No thank you. If I was borderline with some games i would probably jump on it. But I can manage games just fine so far. I dont' need Ultra settings on everything either, depends on game, but usually I'm ok with high settings since Ultra is rarely noticeable improvement or adds a lot of lighting effects that are more annoying than enhancing.

I was responding to ryzeki saying anything less than 100% is not noticeable :)

Looks like the 780M (as we always knew to be honest) is for benchers who want the best and those moving up from the 5XX or generations before.

Lol! I remember this kind of intensity when 680M was about to come out.
So I guess its the time of the year again.

I'm just interested to see what 780M has to offer coming from my Jurassic 580M :D

What a boring bunch of people. :p
"20-30% does not impress me. Meh"

Well in that case the only time you can upgrade is every 2nd year, because thats when the new architectures comes out and its the only times you get 50% extra performance. This time its not just 780M which wants me to upgrade though. Its Haswell, a new CPU architecture. Its 1500MB/s SSDs. New alienware models with IPS screens that sounds really interesting.
I do get much of what I payed for my GT70 back when I sell it so the upcoming notebook won`t be that expensive.

Guess what, I`m also upgrading next year. When SATA Express SSDs are here, DDR4, Maxwell. So I get the best at all times :)'

Its just little 7970M "cheerleaders" who can`t take the heat and tries to get personal (pathetic). Nothing more. I personally hope my GTX 680M get completely crushed. 1 year old tech. Boring, time to move on.

Well, upgrading makes sense to me this time around because a TON of good games is approaching, especially around summer/fall. Time to game a bit :)

Very true. Metro Last Light is one game that is looking to be pretty demanding and will not be playable at the highest settings with a 680M. Battlefield 4, who knows.

I can name more games that is not playable in 1080p with max settings:
    Crysis 3
    Far Cry 3

+ a bunch of games that is dangerously close to 30FPS.

Except I don't know that the 780m will be able to push the extra to get Ultra settings if 680m cannot. Most games, even BF3, Crysis 3, and Far Cry 3 I can't tell the difference between High and Ultra anyhow. 3DMark does not scale linearly with FPS. I find typically performance hungry games run about half the % FPS increase that 3DMark11 shows. 7600 3DMark 11 780m is about 22% over stock 680m, so 11% FPS increase. 30fps to 33fps... meh.

Someone needs to take their "special" hat off...........
I wasn't even referring to the 780m as it's just a tweak gen, nothing worth getting excited about on either side. Like I've already mentioned, Maxwell has grabbed my attention and I am very interested in seeing what the new architecture brings. That being said, "revolutionizing" mobile gaming is a hefty claim and is a term used heavily in marketing with the knowledge that said product likely does not realistically resemble the term. Sorry I just like keeping a level head about these things unlike a lot of people around here who scream like little girls on Christmas " ooooh it's 40%, no it waits it's 30%, hmmmm alright maybe it's closer to 20%!!!!".

The improvements the last gen made were extremely impressive, more so when you take into account the 680's OC ability. With that in mind, I think a lot of well respected people on this forum have good reason to express a certain level of disinterest..........same goes for w/e AMD releases.

Its the other way around with GTX 680MX. Consider that 780M will be higher clocked than 680MX too

I just read through the last five pages, and wow... Getting pretty heated.

To whoever said they have the 580M - you will be shocked when you upgrade to the 780M.

How can 780m be clocked higher than 680mx? 680mx already exceeds 680m TDP by 22W right? Power consumption is likely much higher too. They'd have to roll back clocks to maintain TDP. I doubt laptop makers will want to offer 300W GPU's just to have a single GPU in them. You keep thinking 780m will be clocked higher than the 680mx. I don't see how it can be without bumping TDP and power requirements significantly.
