So do you guys think 3D gaming adds a new layer of depth and immersion into games, or is too gimmicky and expensive, and will fade out like it has before?
-
Well, due to the fact that it gives major headaches over long gaming sessions, I think it won't last long, and the price has yet to go down too.
-
Personally, I think it's a gimmick. Darkens the image, and gives me eyestrain. I'll take a single large high-quality 2D display over 3D any day of the week. -

I must admit the price to get in on the action is pretty high. But it has been the best use of my money for computer-related stuff yet. Games are now 10x more fun, especially Burnout.
Edit: My monitor now feels like a window I'm looking through, not some flat panel on which some picture is being shone; it's quite incredible (especially if you have a game that works well in 3D). -
It's a neat concept, but there are better ways they could have implemented it. It's prohibitively expensive to a lot of people, and it doesn't work well with plenty of games. I'd probably invest in it myself if it didn't use the stupid shutter glasses system, or require a 120Hz display.

Here's my response in another 3D thread

I don't think it'll fade; it'll only grow and become more stable.
It definitely needs alot tunning imo. -
tested 3d gaming at frys and it gave me a headache already!!! :/

I haven't had the joys or horrors of experiencing 3d gaming. I'd like to, but I just don't have the resources to do so. That being, I don't have the knowledge to accurately answer this.

I hate those guys who come in here and say " use the search function this threads been done before", but this topics been done to death, should have searched and revived a dead thread.
My view though is that until Head Mounted Displays become normal for gaming, were you have a personal 100" screen just for your eyes, then we will see the full effects of 3D gaming. But until then, its just a gimmick, it looks like a pop up book, just a bunch of 2D layers, and its horrible for your eyes.
Unfortunately tv makers are pumping it down your neck, regardless if you want it or not. Its a buzz word and its something easy to sell to the sheep of the consumer world. They say "oh ya 3d is catching on" and thats just because you can't buy a tv without it having 3d in it, just because its there doesn't mean we all like it or use it. That said im sure they said that about HDTVs back in the day, but there was obvious benefit to that I think. -
3d gaming and the internet will be on our contact lenses in the future...

the current implementations of 3d are gimmicky and cause eye strain and headaches in a huge amount of the population (whose brains are able to detect that the information being fed by the eyes is not quite right and try to reject it)
3d needs to be:
-perfected (or at least sufficiently revised) so that it doesn't cause eye-strain and headaches for the general public
-implemented without headgear (unless headgear is already commonplace before 3d kicks off). basically - 3d isn't going to push people to wear headgear in the living room. however, something else might convince people to wear headgear pretty much everywhere. if thats the case, 3d will probably get integrated into that tech. -

I mostly like it while playing NFS and GTA's. But in FPS,
The crosshair is not 3d so I have to force my eyes to and fro with the map and crosshair.
