3DMark06 wouldn't run after installing because apparently it want's to install DX9 but since Vista is DX10 native I choose not to download and install DX9.

Any work arounds? Seems silly to have both and not sure if system/games would be smart enough to choose between the two.

    Any advice?

    I installed 3dmak06 on Vista 64.I think that DX10 stays with Vista and can`t be downgraded to DX9. I am reported to have DX10 now,and I installed 3dmark06, so that means I chose not to install DX9 then(I`m making logical assumptions,because I don`t remember anymore :D )

1: The DirectX installer *already* checks what needs to be installed. That means you can safely let it install DX9.

2: DirectX 10 is *not* backwards compatible, and can not run DX9 software.

3: Vista comes with *both* DirectX 9 and DirectX 10.

4: When a program wants to "install DirectX 9", what it really means is "install the specific version of the DX9 helper libraries that the program requires".

5: When a program wants to install DirectX (any version), you just click yes and let it get on with it. Worst case, it'll find that you already have the files, and make no changes. Best case, it'll add the files it needs. Which means it'll run.

Try right-clicking the .exe and clicking "Run as Administrator". See if that does anything.

You have both, and you need both, and games are smart enough to choose between the two. Which is why they do it, rather than the user.

Yeah, let the games deal with it. When they want something installed, let them install it. That's why they ask for it to be installed. Because they need it. ;)

Does 3dmark06 even TEST DX10-style effects and rendering? I admit I don't know for sure, but I suspect 3d06 came out pretty close to the release date of Vista itself, before which there WAS no DX10. Unless both companies worked closely prior to release, there's no way 3dmark06 can test DX10.

Nottingham FC - you need DX9 for 3d06 just as you need it for almost all games available at present. There aren't too many games out yet with DX10 capabilties, and those all have the ability to play in DX9 - some even with better performance. Just because Vista allows you to use DX10 doesn't mean that DX10 supercedes all previous versions of DX (at least not for another year or more), nor that you don't want to have other versions of DX9 on your system. Besides, I saw this same message the other day when reinstalling 3d06 to work with XP, and I think what it was asking for was the DX9.0c update that was released in the second half of last year. So you should already have DX9 installed, just not this update to it.
