    Gday
Buying a new system which is 64Bit windows.

For gaming is it necesscary to get maximum RAM you can afford , in this case 6gig or go for 4gig and upgrade later and save some money.

    Cheers

Most apps and games do not go beyond 4GB and probably won't for another year or so. The only benefit of 6 GB is if you prefer to have many memory-intensive applications running simultaneously (i.e. browser + game + etc).

That being said, check the configuration. If it is 1 stick of 4GB and 1 stick of 2GB then it's a waste since you're better off purchasing another 4GB in the future to total 8GB.

My system is either 3 or 6 the buggers. So Dell must have 2gig stick and and a 1gig stick , then 6 must be a 4 gig then a 2gig stick

Actually the m17x has 4gif RAM so with the 5870 it should be a mean killer of the upcoming crysis and call of duty special ops

At the moment Im swaying too a desktop but love the m17x. However the 5970 2GIG wll keep me gaming for the next 3-4 years at least .

Dell says the m17x can be delivered in 10-14 days estimate and the Desktop Aurora will take up to three weeks - possibly longer. if I drop 2800 dollars for a desktop I want it in a couple weeks max , not a month ...

Depends what you're planning to use your laptop for. For casual gaming and normal everyday tasks I don't think you'd need more than 4GB of RAM. I'm not much of a intensive gamer myself, so the main reason why I went for a machine with 8GB of RAM is because I use a lot of memory intensive applications (AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Revit, Photoshop, etc). None the less, if you want to be more future-proof and you don't mind the extra cost then go for more RAM, but if you're on a budget then invest that money into more important components for that particular laptop.

Hows your Asus going ? any issues with it. I was speaking to a Dell guy in a mall in Perth Australia and he was crapping on about if you by Alienware then Dell will come to your house if there is a problem if it is still under warrenty blah blah blah .
With the Asus the only place is Sydney so if something goes wrong then its off to Sydney for a month most likely while they fix what ever is wrong with it.

So whats the build quality like and any issues with it at all ??

I have 6 GB RAM but I am sure 4GB will be enough. Only GTA IV uses or caches up close to the 4GB but that might be because it sees 6GB so uses as much as it can. Saints Row 2 is also helped by more RAM and I saw some games with recommendations of 4GB minimum.

Yeah I think GTA IV uses more RAM as the graphics tend to be processed as you go along morphing into more detail the closer you get.

COD Special Ops I think will be running on the same engine as COD World at War and expect high FPS on the G73jh, shouldn't even be a worry. More like, whatever.

Crysis II who knows. CryTek are bunch of idiots anyhow.

You reckon the HD 5870 will be able to handle a 46inch Samsung LED via HDMI ???

Tried it with my 1530 with the 8600 GT and I got lots of artifacts wth BFBC2 during explosians.

Shouldn't matter how large your screen is. 1080p is 1080p

    ONLY 2 GIGABYTES!!

Seriously! I don't need any more! I'm getting the same FPS as anyone else with my CPU/GPU!

Now, multitasking could see some improvement... but it's definitely sufficient for anything I'm doing. I'll just avoid any CAD programs for the time being. ;)

Maybe, you have to consider resolution. Higher resolutions require more GPU power. My laptop can handle a 42" on 1440x900 easily, but any higher the game lags like crazy.

All depends on your taste in games.

FWIW, there are games that can easily use way over 6GB right now.

They aren't your typical mainstream titles, but they're there.

    example:

You should be fine with 4 GB, it's more than enough, even for Windows Vista 64.

Over the years I've gone through several laptops of different brands (Toshiba x2, Acer, Dell, and ASUS x5) and so far the best notebook I've owned to date has been the ASUS G73JH-A2. After selling my ASUS G51J-A1 I wasn't planning to buy another laptop, but being in architecture I was in a rush to find something powerful enough for rendering tasks, so I had to fill the spot in a short notice. Having previously owned 5 different ASUS notebooks in a row I was sure of the quality of ASUS products, but upon receiving my G73JH I was more impressed than ever by the overall build quality and design of this machine. To put it into perspective it almost feels like an IBM Thinkpad in terms of solid build. As for issues I've only experienced one so far; after updating BIOS to 206 my illuminated keyboard stopped functioning, but apparently I'm not the only one experiencing this issue, so hopefully ASUS fixes it with another update.

He was just pointing out that 1080p is 1080p (1920*1080 resolution) regardless of screen size.

To OP, i'd go with 4gb and upgrade later if it were needed.
