After installing 175.19 on my G1S a couple of days ago, I decided to spend some time playing around with my settings in COD4, single player.

What I ended up with was 1280 x 720, Textures all high, Shadows enabled, VSYNC ON, and DUAL VIDEO CARDS=ON. This was more or less adequately playable, although in really intense ares, the FPS would drop to the low 20's. This is what often put me off the game slightly when I played it previously, when compared to the 360, as it did feel a bit jerky.

I tried experimenting with AA, although normally I don't even bother with it because it brings my G1S to it's knees with decent settings enabled.

Unbelievably, in most cases, where the machine was under load, I had an INCREASE in FPS at 2xAA and even more of an increase with 4xAA. I couldn't understand why. I kept switching from 0xAA, to 2xAA and 4xAA at various points in the game, comparing FPS. The FPS situation was something like this:

    ...........0xAA...2xAA......4xAA

    FPS...... 24.......27.........30
    FPS.......30.......34.........37
    FPS.......60.....58/59.....58/59

The only thing I did notice was where normally anything that is not taxing, like inside a building, or away from smoke & combat, I would get 60FPS with AA off, but this descreased to 59/58 with AA on, but the other results speak for themselves. I'm not an FPS whore, and don't normally bother displaying them, but the game also played alot smoother and flowed, like it does on my Desktop with 8800GT.

I am aware of what AA does, and that's why I don't even bother with it normally. Any thoughts on why I get an INCREASE in FPS with AA on ???

I'd be interested to hear what others (particularly COD4 on a G1S) experience when trying the same.

    Thanks.

And how was the image quality with 4xAA compared to no AA?

I have come accros something similar with mine. If I set any of the setting sin the nv control panel to anything other than the default. I get a huge drop in perfromance. Not tried increasing aa yet. I think it is down to the fact that the GPU doesn't get as hot now that I leave the settings alone. Must be an 8600mGT thing.

This is the correct question :)

It's possible that the vram taken up when enabling AA pushed some shader\postprocessing\particle effects out or onto system ram(turbocache) and even more when turned up higher causing them not to be rendered.
Of course i'm just grasping at straws here :D
    Any other ideas?

Because it makes the game run that bit smoother. I did this after others reported the same.

Yes, It's a very good question, and I didn't analyse the details so finely, but just noticed the smoothness and the displayed FPS. Becuase I wasn't in my native res, AA isn't as immediately noticeable anyway, but yeah, good question, and when I get chance I'll repeat the same again and see if I am actually getting the visual benefit 4xAA should bring.

OK... so i play alot of this game too, with a 7950GTX single card. And i tried Dual video cards, my FPS stayed the same, but its LESS CHOPPY!!!... like i always had like 50-90 FPS.. depending on the situation at 1400x1050. I turned it on. The FPS is exactly the same in the same spots. But i dont appear to get a framing problem i had earlier. (I was choppy with 90fps and 20 ping, i have no idea why) this actually HELPED the problem. As for the 4x AA, im still testing it. It doesnt rele bring UP my FPS, but it doesnt bring it DOWN either... so thats weird.

Yep, I experience a periodic choppiness if I dont set dual cards to "Yes" on my G1S.

7 Series in SLI have Major Problems with COD4, so playing on SIngle Card mode or any other multi GPU mode will remain at the same Frames, but playing on single card mode can make everything smoother, i'm not talking BS here, that was stated by Nvidia.
