I just downloaded counter strike source from steam today and im only getting about an average of 40-50 fps in it with my brand new Asus g50vt-a1. sometimes it goes to 20 fps.
is this correct becuase in can handle fallout 3 on high with no drops in fps.

i doubt it....CSS is like a 5 year old game... my old desktop with a Pentium 4 3.0Hhz can run it with 100+ fps lol

are u sure your set to High performance? thats usually the problem with most people.

Or maybe your GPU is underclocked

i have an 8800gts with an extreme cpu and my fps still drops to 40, when i had an 8800gts with a 1.8ghz c2d my fps dropped below 30 on a regular basis in a full server

Likely your GPU can't detect whether you're playing a game or not for some reason. There's absolutely no way the cpu is the bottleneck.

Turn off your power saving settings (i believe its called powermizer) for you GPU and see how.

Have you upgraded your drivers from the nvidia website? I get 120+ with everything maxed 16x af 16x aa no problem.

Don't ALT+TAB any source games, it makes the FPS go crazy.

I jacked up all my settings as high as they can go with an E8400 and a GTX 260 core 216 and I only get 60fps (very steady though, never dips below 55 or above 65), so I don't doubt 40fps is proper for that card if your settings are the same. (at 1680x1050)

    Simple way to test it.

Run the 'Video Stress Test' in the main menu and tell us how much fps you are getting. My 8600M GT gets an average of 120fps with all settings high, 4xAA & 8xAF at 1360x850.

If your fps is fine there, then it's a CPU bottleneck.

No, Your CPU is NOT a bottle neck for CS:S. I have a 2.4ghz CPU C2D and It stays about 50% usage when I play CS:S. I have the exact same laptop as you pretty much (G50VT-X2) and I play source games including CS:S and I play at 1680x1050 with 16xAF and 16xAA and HDR enabled and it never drops below 80FPS in game. Also, I alt-tab out of the game probably once every 5-10minutes to change a song or view a web page no problem at all. Are you sure you're using the right drivers? Try the official Nvidia drivers from nvidia.com, also make sure the laptop is set to "High Performance" mode (If you're using P4G)

It cant be a cpu bottleneck, i have the almost exact same setup, mine has a slower proc 2.26 vs his 2.5ghz and i get 199.12 on the video stress test everything maxed out 16x aa and 16x af, it has to be something else.

50% means that its maxing out one of your cores. css isn't multi threaded, so it cant use the other core anyway. YOU are cpu limited also.

Something is wrong on your end. I have the same comp as you with the 180.84 DOX Modified drivers and I never budge from 60fps with vsync on even in heavy situations. Make sure you have your OC on in the direct console (2.8ghz) and that you upgrade to the latest DOX drivers (they made a world of difference in every game for me). Hope all goes well.

exactly i get about 170 fps average in the test with my 8800m gts but in-game fps is very different. my old laptop with a 1.5ghz core 2 duo,8600mgt ddr2, 2gb ram played css just as good as my 6860 can.

I am running Everest which shows both cores and at what % each of the core is at. When running CSS one is at 50% and the other idle's around 25%. I'm not limited by my CPU in CSS by any means.

i think it might be a cpu bottleneck, i can get 20s in 64 player deathmatch servers, and turning off aa/af, turning down settings didn't help at all. i have a 1.8ghz c2d.

EDIT: i get 118fps in the built-in benchmark with the settings i usually use.

The engine was made in 04, it's definately CPU. GPU's are much more powerful these days. A radeon 9800 or geforce 5900 was the best you had back then lol. But P4s and Athlons it was designed for are quite different from today's CPU's (high clocked inefficient single cores). Older C2Ds, x2s, CDs could bottleneck, because it's single threaded. Most noticeable when multiple players are on the screen.

I get about 250 FPS on the stress test all maxed at 1680x1050.

I get about 120-150 in game. The stress test is far less CPU intensive.

    a 1.8 core2duo sucks.

thats a new laptop? because my g1s has a 2.2 core 2 duo and i can play css at around 50+fps on all highest
