i just bought a lenovo y550 with an intel 4500mhd in it i know its not meant for gaming really but is there anyway i can boost performance of it just a little, ive been seeing vids on youtube of people with x3100 that looks like its performing better than my 4500mhd, is there any way to up the memory it uses or something? right now it show

    total available graphics memory 1695mb
    dedicated video memory 32mb
    system video memory 32mb
    shared system memory 1631mb

    i have 4gb of ddr3 ram in this laptop and a c2d t6500 2.10ghz
if there is any way to adjust the memory in the bios plz let me know

I honestly think some of those X3100 videos are fake... I used to have a X3100, and I never even got CLOSE to what some of those guys were getting.

One of my former notebooks had the x3100, and I can honestly say I got better performance in games than my current notebook (with the 4500MHD).

From what I've seen, the core clocks are higher on the X3100's @667 or synchronous with the DRAM. The X4500 tends to be 475-533MHz which isn't a synchronous speed with any RAM, and since the GMA series uses system memory, that may play a part. *Although the X4500 does have more shaders.

Interesting. Do you think 667MHz graphics clock vs. 475 can make a lot of difference?
Let me put it to you another way. I'll compare my two systems, and you can tell me.

    Macbook 2008: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.1GHz/800MHz FSB, Intel x3100, 4GB DDR2 RAM @ 667MHz

    Lenovo U150: Intel Core 2 Duo (ULV) 1.3GHz/800MHz FSB, Intel 4500MHD, 4GB DDR3 RAM @ 1066MHz

Could if the clocks are synchronous. Since this is gaming we're talking details. So take into account a DDR2 system with asynchronous RAM modules. One module is 667MHz and one is 800MHz. Your system will be hob-legged in a way with that configuration, and you're very likely to notice that while gaming. I'd say that the X3100 with synchronous memory and clocks will be more efficient than a system without, but the X4500 should be leaps and bounds over the X3100, just by driver superiority alone. A way to improve the GMA graphics is to overclock your processor. It in effect overclocks every thing (FSB, Proc, GMA, sometimes memory).

I'm glad this thread could help the both of us, I don't mean to take it over.

@XGX2007, that makes a lot of sense. I just tested BF1942 again, I get lower teens to upper 20's in framerates, 800x600, medium settings, standard maps. :\ Playable, but not great by any standards. I wont overclock though, but good luck to slugshot if you do. :)

I should clarify about the overclocking. It increases the FSB speed, which provides more memory bandwidth, therefore it's able to feed more raw data into the GMA core. It doesn't overclock the GMA core.

Mmk. Just makin sure everyone knows. :) I'm still on the fence with overclocking my FSB myself, so I understand your hesitance.

Guys guys, the 667MHz clock versions of the "X3100" are the X3000/X3500 for desktops. And some of you have the severely downclocked version with the GS and GL chipsets.

Yes, as was discovered in my thread, it would appear ours with the GS45 chipset, the graphics chip is clocked at a measely 320MHz.

I have to disagree. With the new core i graphics atleast, performance has improved dramatically. Better than the ATI 3200, and nearly on par with the geforce 9400m.

is there a way to up the dedicated memory of the 4500mhd as mine only has 32mb dedicated and my friends acer with weaker specs than my laptop has 64mb dedicated

can't increase dedicated memory. Its DEDICATED.
