4710MQ Haswell temperatures.

Hiya, I recently bought a Clevo W230SS with a 4710MQ and Maxwell 860M, and while it performs like a dream, the CPU temp touches 80 degrees Celsius in more or less every game I play.

My old laptop's ivy bridge never even approached these kinds of temperatures, and I was wondering whether or not this was safe? Dropping the CPU limit to 99% seems to lower the max temps to about 65-69, but I don't like having to limit performance to keep things safe with a laptop built specifically to perform well.

So, running CPU at 80 degrees for prolonged periods of time, yay or nay? If nay, how should I fix it?

 

Get Intel XTU, put a -70mv voltage offset. If this is stable, it should drop your temperatures by about 4 degrees.
You can upgrade the TIM to Gelid extreme or Phobya extreme. They are both exactly the same thing. This should further drop your temps by 1-2 degrees.

Finally, since haswell scales voltage with clock speed, and the FIVR exponentially gets hotter with more voltage (this is why Ivy was slightly cooler), drop the multiplier (via XTU) to i7 4702mq speeds with the -70mv and your CPU will only hover around 65-70 degrees under full load.

These are tweaks I've done with my W230ss.

 

My CPU runs between 70 and 85 degrees C depending on what game I am on. I don't think you should worry about it too much. Ivy bridge was cooler, no doubt, or at least easier to cool down.

 

Isnt 80 degrees low for a haswell CPU?

 

thats strange, my 4700mq from my gt70 dragon never really breaks 70c for the most part playing HD modded console games/path of exile/dota 2/etc and MSI isn't particularly known for it's cool laptops.

 

OP, have you tried using max fans with fn + 1? It should help a lot; also propping up the back of your laptop a little could also help a lot. If you do both of these things you could lose a solid 10 degrees c off your CPU and maybe 3-5 off your GPU (or more).

 

80c is fine especially while gaming.

 

I'm really curious about these relatively low temps on this little 13 incher in comparison to its 15 inch brother, the W350SS.
Both of them have only one fan, but if these 80° C are true, the little brother has significantly lower temps than the W350SS, where CPU temps get up to quite toasty 98° C!!

 

mine goes up to 83 deg C with -80mV undervolting at 35deg ambiant temp (no air conditioning).

 

certainly looks like they done there homework on this model as 80c is a great temperature especially with only 1 fan. my
P150EM peaks at mid 90c on a hot day but luckily here in the uk its mid summer and its friggin freezing.

 

I think the ambient temps, thermal paste, max fans or not AND how far it's raised off the back of the table should make a fairly large difference in how hot those two laptops get. The OP might be in a pretty good situation for all of this, while some of the rest of you aren't.

If you guys have all been using IC Diamond or better, propping up the back a little and using max fans and STILL hit well over 90s just gaming... then I gotta stop recommending the W350SS to people XD.

 

My 3940XM hits 95C even with max fans ... It doesn't matter as long as your temps are below 100C...

 

I've got a 4700mq, but I get around 65 degrees on full load with 3.6ghz overclock. Prime95 small FFT gets it up to 75
