Well, it seems like not many people (if any at all) can break the magical 5000 barrier with a 8600M GT GDDR3 running at this resolution, and I seemed to have passed it by quite a margine, so the first thing I want to ask is: Was this test I did fair? If it wasn't a fair test, then it was a genuine mistake and I apologize for it.

    - Running 3Dmark06 Basic edition
    - Hooked up to an external display (Samsung SyncMaster 931BF) which has a native resolution of 1280x1024
    - Clock speeds are 600/900, and is stable. Ran both COD4 and TF2 for over 5 hours straight each, with no problems.

awesome score, but I cant even push mine over 800 without getting artifacts. 95c looks really hot too, mine only gets to about 80-81c before dropping back

Mmm....my GPU never hit 95 C. The max it's ever hit is 89 C, but that's just a short while. It's usually around 80 - 82 C when I'm playing games (COD4) on overclocked settings. The funny part is how it hits 85 - 86 C when playing Cabal Online on underclocked (375/500) settings.

But seriously...yea I'm a little worried about my temperatures. It idles at around 70 C when I'm doing nothing more than surfing forums, chatting on MSN & listening to my songs on iTunes. Easily hits 80s when I'm playing games. smcFanControl's a ***** to use too. I'll probably get a cooling pad by the end of the week...

It was a fair test, but I think the reason that most don't break the 5000 barrier is because they're using Vista. Going from XP to Vista reduces the score by a pretty significant amount. I could be wrong about this, though.

    Either way, nice score :)

The DDR3 8600mGT does run quite a bit hotter than the DDR2. In my XPS, the idle temp is in the 60's and under load it gets up to 78-79C at the highest (averages about 76C). I seem to think that the macbook is notorious for running hot as well.

I wish I could stick clocks on my MBP like others. I think EFI is messing with the OC or something.

I get around 4000 at that res with 169.25 in Vista.

Looks like you are using XP, which probably adds a good 200-300 points.

Cathy you better watch out for those temperatures...it could dramatically reduce the lifespan of your GPU ...70 idle is HOOOOT!!!! i run at about 54C idle w/ cooling pad on...74 MAX while gaming

    *sigh*

Well, I live in one of the warmest countries. (the coldest it ever got here is 22C, once in 1934 and the second time just a few weeks ago. Doesn't help that the Macbook Pro runs REALLY hot. I hit low 80s even when running games at underclocked speeds. (that's normal for a MBP)Gonna need a cooling pad, find a way to manually jack up my fan speeds, and clean out the dust every week I guess... :(

I always find it anoying that whenever I run 3dmark and submit it , there is 100,000 odd better scores than mine. Lol , is that just the same people running the test over and over???
I must of run 3dmark06 atleast 20 times on multiple pcs!

Seriously don't worry about it. Your GPU lifespan will NOT be significantly reduced. As long as you can keep it below 85C most of the time I think you'll be fine. I use a sheet of metal to help dissipate the heat off the bottom of the system, but you COULD get a cooling pad if you wanted.

I've been running this MBP for over half a year, sometimes at 95C, and its still going strong. Plus, if you think your system idles hot, some Asus machines idle even hotter!

EDIT: Only GPUs I've blown up were running over 100C. Technically they should be able to survive 125C, but that is about as variable as overclockability.

    Mmm...my notebook runs at 80 - 86 C for about 2 - 4 hours a day. Perhaps another 4 - 6 hours at 67 - 72 C. It's never ever went past 90C though. Also...I'm going to need this notebook to survive for at least 3 years too.

    Running DDR3 at 60 C idle, overclockd 565/792
while gaming it varies somewhere around 68 ~ 82 C. mostly around 78 ~80 avg.

I'm attempting to overclock a 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro (the one with the 512 MB Geforce 8600M GT), and have been running into the following issue:

Upon hitting the "Set Clock" button in ATITool 0.26, the clock sliders for all three phases (2D, 3D low performance, 3D high performance) drop all the way down. The reported clocks for each phase becomes the default clock divided by ten (169 MHz becomes 16.9 MHz, etc), and shortly thereafter the whole system bombs, leaving me with a two-toned grey screen.

I'm running a clean installation of Windows XP Pro SP3 and have a fresh copy of the Forceware 177.83 drivers from Laptopvideo2go.com.

Does this problem sound familiar to any of you, and if so, were you able to work around it?

Well Macs aren´t known for good cooling solutions, like PC´s. There is a difference between an XPS 1530 cooling solution and a Macbook Pro cooling solution.

This is what i got with my HD3650. I guess you can compare it with the 8600GT. Ran the test in Vista + some sony laptop stuf in the back. Also havnt touched any driver settings so its all set on quality instead of performance. Id reckon give or take 300 - 500 marks increase if i would run it on XP with out bloatware. Xp would give me 300 marks more already, even untuned.

Now, i know the score aint verry interesting but the temps realy are good on this GPU. Even when Oced from 450 mhz core 600 mem.

Dudes, laptop coolers are the way to go man. Im hitting 56-57 idle and 75-82C gaming using powermizer disabled constant 680/880 overclocks. It just seem like all the issues Nvidia had with their 8000s line overheating isn't an issue to me now!

Wow that is a really great score !!!! When I had my MSI GX600 it *only* had the GDDR2 8600M GT and with an Intel Extreme 7800 CPU overclocked to 2.8GHz by the laptop's TURBO Button and N-tune OCing of the GPU (forgot the settings :D ) I was able to get around 4700 - 4800 on 3DMark06 at 1280 x 1024 and it was pretty stable too. These 8600M GT cards are great !!! God Bless :)
