I'm looking to buy a new Alienware m17x.... I'm just trying to figure out of I actually need anything above the base model... I'll up the ram for sure... Not sure of I even need to get the higher tiers of the I7, but My real concern is the graphics card... Is the 1.5GB GTX 560M strong enough to max the settings on WoW and EVE online while keeping a good frame rate? These are pretty much all I play.. Them and Starcraft 2... Thanks for any advice...
PS I'm wanting to know if it's strong enough without overclocking

Why up the RAM, and to how much?
If you really really really need the RAM, get the based offered and buy some RAM off Newegg and do it yourself. $200 for an 8gb upgrade kit is outrageous and 8gb is probably not even necessary.

And keep the base i7-2670 processor, no reason to waste money on a processor upgrade. I would also upgrade the screen if you are absolutely set on an Alienware. The 1600 x 900 isn't the greatest resolution.

When I had my gaming laptop, my GTX 260M could max WoW, all ICC 10mans, and Firelands 10 mans. Not sure about EVE tho. Here are the benchmarks for the 560m: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

If you're going to spend around $1,200 and have a budget, your best bet is the Force 16F2 with with 580m upgrade. 580m>>560m

You can most definitely max out WoW with that GPU (ultra). That's more than enough power for WoW's raids/heroics/BG's ;)

As for RAM, this is the RAM motto:
    - 4GB (Gaming)
    - 6GB (Music Production)
    - 8GB+ (3D/Heavy Adobe)

There is one exception to this rule. If you like to heavily customize your desktop with toolbars, gadgets and themes, then add 1GB to the equation if at 4GB or else you'll be near capped when gaming unless you disable your customization every time you game (which is easy).
Here is an example: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/845/newdesktopedited.png/ (one of my customizations)

DOOOOOOOOOOON'T buy m17x with 560m and upgrade the ram!!! DON'T for the love of all DON'T!! you are already paying a handsome sum for the base m17x-r3, at least upgrade GPU AND FHD screen (don't touch anything else), then buy ram aftermarket (HyperX 1600mhz 9CL 8GB ~ 70 bucks), PLEASE oh pretty please don't do this to yourself, you will regret it. Just do what I say and you will love the machine :) get 580m and FHD screen :)

Thought I would if the OP didn't know what a heavily customized desktop looked like :p lol

    graz`zt:

Wouldn't the 6990m be a better bargain for the OP as opposed to the 580? Last time I checked, the 580 was several hundred dollars more for 5%< performance. Nonetheless, the 560m can definitely more than handle the games he/she has listed (even the 6870 can do the trick) ;)

for m17x 580m and 6990m are the same price, therefore 580m is the way to go

Oh, really? That must be a US-only thing then :(

    Here in Canada, we have:
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M [add $300.00 or $9.00/month1]
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M [add $600.00 or $17.00/month1]

Even though our dollar is worth 1% more as of today.

    Edit:
    US Site:
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M [Add $325.00 or $10.00/month1]
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M [Add $425.00 or $13.00/month1]

100$ for 5% performance. I don't think it's worth it (that 100$ is better invested in an SSD) :p
