can anyone tell me if there really is a huge difference between a quadro fx 570m 256MB card and a 8600GT 512MB card. i will probably not be using this card to play games so does the amount of memory matter.

256mb of memory is all you need. The 512 mb of ram 8600 Gt's is Gddr2 and therefore it performs about 20 percent slower than the 570 256mb.

Btw, even at high resolutions on the latest games, there isn't any difference between 256mb of ram and 512mb of ram (based on an 8600GT desktop review I saw on hardocp.com).

so what is the purpose of having the extra ram on the video card?

afeni23, the mobile 8600m has 256mb of dedicated ram + whatever else comes from the turbocache option. how did u come up with that 20% less conclusion?

Because he is comparing DDR2 to GDDR3.

It doesn't matter what the chart says. The card in the 15.4" T61p performs the same as the 8600m GT in the Asus G1s. Go look at the T61p review.

Ah yeah now I see the top chart is for desktops.

i already took that off, the chart for mobile version was right below the main one and it did have the gddr 3 on it...
p.s. seems like people r trying to catch other people's mistakes to look better than them, right?

Yes, the G1S and G2S both have GDDR3 memory.

If you are directing that at me, then perhaps you shouldn't link to a chart that proves the other person's point. Isn't my fault you didn't take the time to look at it thoroughly.
