So basically I have an m15x, and I'm wondering if it's worth the money to upgrade from an ATI Mobility Radeon 5730 to a 5850.

This notebook is primarily my gaming machine, and I do intend to play current gen games.

Am I going to see a noticeable and substantial increase in FPS?

Yes greatly. The 5850M has twice the Shaders and the AW version is also GDDR 5, which gives over 50% more memory bandwidth. Very good upgrade! You can also overclock the AW 5850M to 5870M speeds for even more power and profit!

5730 is much much worse than 5850.

Well, if the 5730 was a GDDR5 GPU, it would be only 10-20% worse than the 5850... Too bad it isn't GDDR5 :(

But yes, the 5850 is much better than the 5730, because as Star Forge said, it has 2x the shaders and it's GDDR5.

    It gives 100% more bandwidth.

    So its twice the card.

    800 shaders, 16 ROPs, 128bit GDDR5 (1000mhz)
    400 shaders, 8 ROPs, 128bit GDDR3 (800mhz)

Due the the clock speed advantage the 5850 actually has 2.5x the bandwidth.

No its way further ahead than that.

Definitely go for that 5850, if you have the dough, i would go for a 6970m instead. It's doable in a m15x-R2 but you'll need to comtrol the fans by software to prevent them from running at 100% all the time.
