A mobile ATI HD 5870 is based on a desktop HD 5770.
The mobile HD 5850 is just a lower clocked 5870 (If im not mistaken).

Oay thanks, god the naming system is so confusing, if i am right then the desktop 5850 > desktop 5770.

How performance increase would one see with he 5850m and the 5870m?

Probably about equivalent to a 5750?

A fairly respectable card, especially for something with that sort of power in a notebook.

You would probably get around 10% better performance with a 5870M, if I am guessing correctly. There isn't much difference between the two. And if you are lucky, you may get a well binned card, that can overclock to 5870M levels, thus having the same performance.

    5870m with slight OC = 5770 desktop..

5850M is actually much weaker than 5770...

The Mobility 5850 is very close to the desktop 5750 in performance, with slightly lower clock speeds but more shaders. The Mobility 5870 has 12% faster core clock but the same memory clock speed as the Mobility 5850, while the desktop 5770 has a 36% faster core clock and a 20% faster memory clock than the Mobility 5850.

Overall, the Mobility 5850 is about equal to the desktop 5750, and the Mobility 5870 is closer to the 5750 than it is to the 5770.
