Notebookcheck gets blocked on this computer for some reason, and the comparison page hasn't been updated in awhile, so I was wonder how large the gap was between the 5870 and 6990.

I'm looking at a used m17 with crossfire 5870's for a relatively cheap price compared to spending $3k+ on a new system with crossfire 6990's. So I was wondering the difference was in power (maybe some 3dmark scores or just general knowledge), and if possible a comparison vs my old 9800m gtx SLI setup.

In benchmarks dual card configs have quite an advantage, but when it comes to games, the 6990m will perform at least as well as CF 5870m, without the issues of dual card setups.

You can put the 6990 in crossfire in the R2. So that is another option. instead of shelling out 3k for the M18x you can get an R2 spend $600 or so on new 6990's and still be under an M18x and if it does not come with an XM you can buy one from ebay for $300-350. The difference in performance is anywhere from 40-60%. Between your 9800m GTX SLI setup they both are a LOT better 285M's in XF are weaker than 5870's.

I'm actually leaning towards getting the new clevo with 6990's in CF as I've found one for about $2500. This option would give me a better processor as well, and the machine would be new/still under warranty for not much more $.

5870 in CF is still nothing to scoff at. It will play the games you need them to play at good settings. They overclock extremely well too. Id probably save the 1000 dollars and pick up a dell R2 with warranty and 20% off coupon when available for like 1500. I have 6970s and the 5870s are weaker for sure..but gaming wise, I don't tell TOO much difference. Plus Dell warranty is hard to beat. Just food for thought if you are on a budget.
