    60Fps Gaming and EPsxe....please explain to me...

    so i've been hearing all this rare about "more frames the better", saying that more frames will give smoother gameplay/graphics.

    MY question how come when i'm playing the epsxe emulator and i don't cap the FPS to 30fps and cap it instead at 60 fps, i don't see smoother/ less jittering graphics at all. INSTEAD, at 60fps everything just moves twice as fast. and if i leave it uncappped and it goes to 120fps, the gameplay really speeds ups.

    So how come i'm not getting smoother graphics but instead getting faster gameplay/animations...?

    Probably because the game engine's simulation and physics are tied to frame rate and designed for 30 FPS. This is mainly a console thing as they have frame rate targets and was a more common practice 15 years ago during the PS1 era. Nowadays, it's virtually non-existent, especially on PC, except for the anomaly that is NFS Rivals (can be fixed with a couple launch commands).

    That is because ePSXe and PC games use the acronym fps differently.

    For PC games that get displayed on a PC monitor, the higher the frame rate the smoother the gameplay. In this case fps indicates the rate at which the GPU renders and displays frames at the monitor. The monitor gets refreshed 60 times in one second. If the GPU can't fill each of this refreshes with a frame, it means this frame gets skipped and it tries with the next one. This is the reason why with graphically heavy games you don't get a smooth rate at high settings. The GPU just can't cope with the amount of information at the rate of the monitor.

    In ePSXe instead fps is treated differently. Since PSX games are not that graphically intensive and they existed in a time where CRT TVs were the norm, the refresh rate of the games was fixed at 30 frames rendered per second. And since the current PC hardware is a lot more powerful for PSX emulation than when the console existed, any increase on the frame rate means an increase on the number of frames diplayed in one second. Ok by doubling on that 30 fps you get smoother gameplay (by smoother I mean as in what you see onscreen) but the refresh cycles of the screen need to be filled with something so the emulator uses unique frames (not the same frames as on PC games that give you a slideshow effect).

    Still doesn't make sense because some of what you said is not true...for example, the refresh rate of games was not fixed at 30fps. Some ps1 games were at 60fps, for example Omega Boost.

    Epsxe runs the games at their native frame rate. If the game is coded for 30FPS and you set it to 60FPS, the only way it can achieve that is to double the speed of the emulated processor which doubles everything.

    Keep in mind that epsxe is buggy. It uses graphics filters, hacks of all kinds, etc to make the games more modern or whatever. If you want to play them how they were intended then get pSX and enjoy near perfect no-frills emulation of the PS1.
