I've got a lead on an excellent deal for an HP nc8230 w/64MB X600. Will that card handle for moderate graphics/animation work (no gaming, just work apps)? I have to make a decision in 24 hours.

    Thanks!

well my x700 handles all my 2d/3d/cad graphics uni apps fine, very fine.....i would expect the x600 to be bout 30-40% slower, so in my opionion, it would be ok, and if u have a low budget then it will be fine :p there are better(more expensive) options out there, like the fireGL, and quatro cards, optimised for cad work, but id say the x600 will be ok, not the fastest, but acceptable.

Whats the price on the nc8230? Because the Dv4000 isn't price bad at all. And it has a more powerful X700 GPU. Also... what apps will you be using?

The nc will offer better build quality.

Personally, after having the 14" variant of that laptop, I would go to the z60m instead. Build quality and screen quality is a few notches above, and if you use an alumni discount through IBM, price will be less than HP :)

Well, if you softmod the X600 to a V3200 - which I believe you can do - you'll be just fiine. Even with the X600 by itself, you shouldn't have a problem.

HP's business line of notebooks have excellent quality.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'm getting my nc8230 through a contact at work. It'll have Pentium M 750, 1GB 533MHz, 40GB 7200RPM, 15.4" WSXGA+ WVA, ATI X600 64MB, 2915ABG, Bluetooth, XP Pro, 3 year onsite warranty, magnesium case, brand new machine: $1050 total. You really can't beat that price for such a top quality notebook.

My main apps will be Office, DocBook, FrameMaker, RoboHelp, RoboDemo, Captivate, a little Maya, Paint Shop Pro, several work-related apps. I'll probably upgrade the hard drive to 60MB 5400 and the RAM to 2GB 533MHz on my own. I'll try soft-modding the X600, as Chaz suggested.

I'll post some comments and pics in the HP/Compaq forum once I get the notebook (late next week).

If you need more RAM in the HP, you can just take one of the gig sticks out of your Sager and put it in there. :) Then you'll have 1.5GB in each machine.
