My Inspiron 1520 is on the way and I was curious as to what kind of a performance increase I could see in games (if any) with my new specs. I'm not into the "newest" games like Crysis or CoD4; I mainly play games like Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations, HL2, and the FIFA series (08 version included).

    My Current PC (nothing oc'ed):
    AMD64 3700+
    1024MB DDR
    BFG 6600GT 128MB

    Inspiron 1520 config:
    Intel Core2 Duo T5450
    2048MB Dual-Channel DDR2
    Nvidia 8600M GT 256MB

As well, I know the T5450 is no marvel but is it better than my trusty 3700+ San Diego?

You will get better gaming performance, but it will be slightly lowered by your processor choice...I would have gone with at least a T7250 or 7300 for gaming use.

no thats wrong you will see a great increase in preformance. the processer you chose is a fine choice. All the core 2 duos are great for gaming.

The 8600M GT is no powerhorse to start with. Will the 5450 really bottleneck it?

Not if you are planning on playing older games, that CPU will handle them easily. The newer games that rely heavily on physics engines will take a hit...otherwise you should be fine.

Dont be stupid , That will not be anywhere near bottlenecked.. The differance from the processors is maybe 5% Fps increase.. not worth it atall

Honestly , Stick with the t5450.

You should see a big improvement in theory. The 8600gt laptop card gets over twice the score in 3dmark05 but obviously that doesnt always give a perfect comparsion. however the games youre intending on playing are around that age so you should see a big improvement. The 8600gt should max out most of those games at 15in res and will play CoD4 well too.

In the world of laptops the 8600m is a power house...maybe not compared to the 7x00 series but in terms of price vs. performance, yeah, I'd say so.

These 2 cards shouldn't be compared. The 8600 is no powerhouse but it is a fine card. The technology that's been put in to the 8600 is so different than the 6600.

The CPU/hard drive effects won't be noticed while gaming except during loading times and if you decide to load up a game with all your applications open and 10 torrents downloading.

If you could, upgrade to the T7250 atleast - you won't regret it, it handles all these new games amazingly well.

I went from a P4 2.4 gigz, 1gig of ram, and geforce 6600 - Needless to say loving my laptop and all the newer game ;)
