I'm considering buying Skyrim but want to make sure I'm going to get the most out of it with my NP8170 (specs in sig). Anyone else have input on how it runs in various graphic settings on a 6990M?

on 6970M which is slower than yours fully maxed out, should be absolutely no issue for 99% max settings

Yep the game is very well optimized, you should be able to max it out and get a great frame rate.

On my weaksauce 5830m, with high res texture pack and some improved modded textures, in most areas I get 40-60 fps @ 1920x1080, all settings maxed except FXAA instead of MSAA. In Markarth it drops down below 30 fps, but still playable.

There is a kind of microstutter issue some have, which has nothing to do with frame rate. This seems to be improved by using an external frame rate limiter like MSI Afterburner to cap the frame rate at 60fps.

Just finished uploading a video I made last night. Recorded some Skyrim gameplay with FRAPS instead of my usual iphone camera, heh.

Did a full resolution capture of 1368x760 but had to cut fps limit down a lot to keep the video from being too large and taking a week to upload to Youtube.

Limited the fps to 20 so looks much less smooth as it does for me normally (usually around 35'ish while the heavy rain is going on, 45-60 without the rain). Have a truck load of mods installed to increase Texture Resolution, Mesh Quality, LoD Quality and the list goes on.

Running the game on my 9800m gts and an x9100 dual core.

I hope this answers your question if your top of the line GPU can run Skyrim, showing how a mid range gpu from 3 years ago can do it :)

I run Skyrim at 1920x1080 60fps on ultra with the hi-res texture pack and 20 or so add-ons in my m17xr3. Turn off aa and turn down shadows if you you see fps drops.

Just got it installed and running with HD textures. Getting a good 40-60 FPS with all settings maxed and FXAA 4x. Thanks for the input guys.

If you want to try to further improve some of the visuals without sacrificing frame rate, Koroush Ghazi has a great tweak guide

Also there are a couple of mods that improve performance by getting rid of corpses, etc. and there are a few great replacer textures for things like snow and ice. Vurt's Flora Overhaul is also excellent.

Yeah I run Skyrim at Ultra and it runs buttery smooth on my 6970m so your 6990m should be buttery smoothER!

^And if you remove corpses, how are you supposed to find and loot them??

Everywhere, I have never had an issue an any Skyrim version with slow downs, in cities, open skyrim, dungeons, heavy snow/rain, nothing ever.

It makes corpses and ash piles disappear after a few days or something.

    For example, this mod

I just googled it and am impressed with the improvement of leaves and so forth. My only question is, can it be used in conjunction with the HD texture mod?
*edit* Found the answer to this myself. Yes, it can. Sweet!
