So what exacly are the safe temps for a 6990M under load?
Just baught a Zalman 3000S cooler and I'm seeing 85 degrees max in Bad Company 2 with a 820/960 OCand about 48-50 on idle. Is that alright?

that's about right...for stock thermal paste

what thermal paste are you using? you can drop the temps another 10c if you use quality thermal paste like MX-4. Also, you can drop it even more if you get some decent thermal pads like fijipoly 6w/mk pads. (Another trick is to raise the back of the computer up slightly to increase air flow. That will drop your temps another 3-5c. You already have notebook cooler so this might not apply to you because your back is already raised up sucking in cooler air)

for reference, i went 2 hrs of crysis 2 on ultra dx 11 and my gpu temps never went over 75c (6990m OC'ed to 800/1100)

I ordered the laptop with Arctic Cooling MX-3. And yes, the back is raised by the cooler.

It's the pcspecialist Vortex II, which is based on the P170HM.

    nice machine.

    HEre look at this review:

2011 Thermal Compound Roundup – Results Compilation | Skinnee Labs

It is a review of all the popular thermal pastes. Click on "Moderate" contact which is probably the most accurate for laptop GPU coolers. MX-3 is old and does not perform well compared to modern pastes. You could drop your temps by using a better paste. Why would the guys at PCspecialist use MX-3? Its ancient

i actually called them and they don't have any plans to make it for mobile chips...sucks for us

Anyways, i just got my hands on some prolimatech PK-1. When my new CPU comes in, i'll do a test to see if its better than the IC-Diamond 7 i have on there now

Looking forward to those results Slick! I am interested in trying something else. TX-4 has served me very very well, and I honestly get some really insanely low temps. I just wanna see if I can get lower without doing the C-clip mod.

i'd be so careful with that mod. You could crack the exposed CPU die.

So far, i've tried Artic cooling 5, IC Diamond 7 and MX-2. ICD-7 has been the lowest so far. The PK-1 is suppose to be better though, so we'll see. Hopefully i'll have the CPU by next week
