750m failed?

While i was playing GTAV my laptop's screen suddenly went black and froze and after a restart my 750m no longer showed up in device manager. I tried running DDU which detected the 750m and it removed the drivers and i tried reinstalling the Nvidia drivers with no avail. My worst fears that the GPU has died and im hoping thats not the case. My laptop still works normally thanks to the Intel IGP but obviously i cant play any games without the Dedicated GPU.

Unfortunately it looks like your GPU has failed. Every GPU will fail eventually, which isn't too big of a deal when you have a desktop or a laptop with an MXM slot, but when its BGA there is not much else you can do other than replace the motherboard. Since you can still use the iGPU though I would suggest leaving it and replacing that laptop whenever possible. If you have space, build a desktop. If not, there are still some models with socketed hardware around (though they are increasingly rare).

For one last chance at seeing if you can revive it though, try a CMOS reset by removing the CMOS battery. I wouldn't have much hope though because those symptoms look pretty clear as you mentioned.

 

Yeah i am aware of BGA chips and thats one of the cons about laptops. I'll try doing a CMOS reset tonight and do a repaste of the GPU and dust out the machine and pray that the chip will somehow revive itself. A new motherboard for my laptop is around $70-$130 which isnt too bad, problem is the wait time because its shipping from China and idk if its worth it. I been thinking about buying a new laptop for a while since i had this laptop for over 5 years now but im not ready to as of yet because i am saving for a new car plus some other things i want to do. I still got hope that the GPU isnt dead.

 

Maybe your next laptop won't have to be a BGA turdbook. You're very fortunate that it lasted 5 years. Sounds like you've gotten your money's worth out of it. It's a pity that it is not MXM, so you could just slap another GPU in it and keep going.

 

Update: My worst fears came true the GPU is dead after resetting the CMOS plus repasting the GPU, Nothing else i can do about it. I found a new motherboard with the 750m on ebay for only $78 in new condition that ships in the US and i'll order it later this week. Ironically replacing the motherboard is easier than replacing the keyboard on this laptop lol. If i do buy a new laptop at least i'll make half my money back when i sell this one with a working dedicated GPU. Still hoping the GPU will start working again before i order the motherboard which is very doubtful.

Yeah i wish it was too, I would gladly upgrade it with a better GPU years ago. The laptop is still fast after 5 years thanks to the i7 + the SSD upgrade, Most likely my next laptop with be a BGA as i dont want to drop $2,000+ on any laptop. I got my money worth out of it for sure!.

 

Well, $78 is a cheap fix. No point in spending more than that if you don't have to. I wouldn't.

When the time comes to replace it, maybe you can find a really good deal on a nice second hand laptop. An older Dell Precision or HP Business class notebook (both generally have a metal chassis and are built like a brick house) with a socketed LGA Haswell or Sky Lake CPU and MXM 3.0B GPU can be purchased for a whole lot less than $2,000. You can find some decent off-lease models with a warranty, and you can possibly even use your RAM and SSD in it.

 

Yeah, sadly its the 2GB version of the 750m and not the 4GB version that HP replaced before but its cool, Its better than spending an extra $20-50 and/or waiting about 3 weeks to get here from China. My laptop crashed a few times last night, lines on the screen and stuff, i guess its trying to use the dead GPU so i gotta fix it as soon as possible.

I been thinking about that, I always liked business class laptops because of their quality and support and i want something that'll last and wont break down soon after the warranty is over.

Its starting to make more sense to buy a desktop than a gaming laptop these days. Since manufacturers only offer 1 year of free warranty you're out of luck if something happens to it, It used to be 2 years of free warranty for laptops thats in the premium/gaming tier years ago. Good times

 

The symptoms you're experiencing sound like failed/cracked solder joints on or around the GPU. If it's easy to remove the motherboard, you could try baking it in the oven to get it back up and running, at least temporarily. There are plenty of guides available on what temperature and duration to use.

 

I might give it try someday but its already too late since i already installed the new motherboard and my 750m is working now. The only problem is that my recovery disks no longer works because the new motherboard has a Windows 8.1 key and not a Windows 8 key but its cool since i dont have to do all of the Windows updates in order to install 8.1, luckily i had a old Windows 8.1 disk that i found in the house.

I will be buying a new laptop in like a year or sooner if something else happens with this laptop.

 

I baked my 6990m clevo notebook....

I highly recommend against doing that as it's a super temporary fix...im talking hours of extra use.

 

Thats really not worth it. Personally i dont want to remove the motherboard of this laptop ever again to even see if baking will help revive the dead GPU.

 

Quick question

Is it normal for DDR3 GPUs to be clocked at 1001MHZ at default?. The dead 750m memory was clocked at 900mhz which is normal for DDR3 GPUs. I was thinking about overclocking the memory a bit to gain more performance on 1080p

 

I always hated the 750m, I had a laptop with the 750m that was replaced under warranty 3 times in 2 years. The 4th time it failed and I replaced the motherboard that had a 755m and gave it to my sister. It still works today.

 

That sucks, my 750m reached temps in the mid 90s even with undervolting and turboboost turned off but after a repaste and cleaning out the dust it dropped back to the low 80s, It can be a lot of factors of why it died, my laptop cooling system isnt good plus Haswell CPUs are known to run very hot. Also any BGA GPU chip can die at any time these days.
