Hi i am jst about to upgrade my laptop in a few weeks and am considering getting the Toshiba Satellite P100 that has the Geforce 7600 with 128mb dedicated.. It will only cost me €1300 but im wondering if its worth spending an extra €300 for the model that has the 7600 with 256mb dedicated..
Can someone tell me what the performance difference is between the two??

    Thanks..

well to compare the 128mb x1600 I have scores around 3000 3dmarks, the 256mb version scores from 3700-4200(depending on model). The x1600 and 7600 are very similar. 2000 3dmarks are needed for medium settings on modern games and 4000 is needed for max settings. Its all in what games you plan to play.

Well at the moment the most demanding games i have are Far Cry, NFS Most Wanted and some combat sims that dont run too well on my x200M as you can imagine!.. I know the 7600 is in a totally different league and im guessing that i can run those games at their absolute MAX and still have perfect smooth gameplay and fps?? Would i be able to max out DOOM3 aswel?

doom3 being a opengl game yeah youll be able to run some good settings. Maxed, I dont know. But yeah the 7600/x1600 are in a different league then the 200m. I had a 200m before this lappy and Ill never go back.

I run Doom 3 at high, 1280x1024 on my X700 256MB, so the Go7600 will be problem-free. Far Cry also runs at the same settings - SXGA, Maximum.

The last laptop I tested, the Compal HEL80, had an underclocked Go7600 256 - I ran Far Cry at 1680x1050 at maximum with no troubles.

My Go7600 256mb scores around 3800-3900 in 3dmark05. Never tried Doom 3 on it, but Far Cry runs at high res, high settings smooth as silk. The games you mentioned will run beautifully at high settings. I'd go for the 256mb version if you can afford it. You'll be glad you did & feel that your machine is a little more "future-proof".

But 300 euros (~400 USD) for 128mb of ram seems kinda steep. Yeah its a little improvement in fps and quality, but seems a little steep. I would say that much money could be better spent than for 10 fps in most games. It all depends on u and if ur budget allows u.

IIRC, 256MB only becomes useful for increasing fps at resolutions of over 1280x1024 with heavy AA and AF. The 7600 is a powerful piece of hardware, you should be fine with 128MB.

Can you be specific with the specs of the two models? (CPU, RAM, HDD, other features)

In modern games at high settings, these are usually the conditions under which 512MB starts to make a difference not 256MB which will help at much lower settings/resolutions. You will be satisfied with the 128MB card but the extra 128MB of RAM will come in very handy both now and in particular in the future.

I do however agree that an extra 200 Euros is very steep, is this the only difference between the models? If you were getting a CPU speed bump and more RAM or a bigger hard drive for your money, then it would seem a much more attractive proposition.

Sorry it took so long to write back..

Yeah theres a performance difference in the two laptops overall..

Theyre both Toshiba Satellite Pro P100's. 17inch

The cheaper one is as follows:

    Dual Core T2300
    60Gb HD
    512 DDR2 Ram
    Geforce 7600 128mb dediacted
    €1449

    Expensive One:

    Dual Core T2400
    100Gb HD
    1 Gb DDR2 Ram
    Geforce 7600 256mb
    €1799

    Cant afford the expensive one!

But im after finding a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 17inch with the following amazing spec!

    Dual Core T2400
    80Gb HD
    1Gb DDR2 RAM
    ATI X1800 256!!!!!!!!!!!

    And only €1334!!!!

How much better would the X1800 be than the 7600?? 35%??

The only thing im worried about is the fact that the Fujitsu Siemens arent very reliable and pretty cheap whereas the Toshibas are pretty much the most reliable laptops out there!! And I love the Look of the P100!!

    Any Advice Guys?????

    Thanks in advance

It is 256MB dedicated in the HEL80. The Asus A8JM has a 512MB dedicated Go7600.

Yes, I played it at XGA with all high settings beautifully.
I don't know why they have it listed as a Go7600GT, because the HEL80 doesn't have that.
